Description
E. Guigal’s Côte-Rôtie Brune & Blonde 2021 is a classic expression of the Northern Rhône, combining the power and structure of the appellation with the elegance for which Guigal is renowned. Named after Côte-Rôtie’s distinctive Brune and Blonde slopes, this refined red offers ripe berry fruit, subtle oak spice and beautifully integrated tannins. It is a wine with both immediate appeal and the pedigree to reward further cellaring.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour. Its nose opens with inviting aromas of red berries, spice and delicate oak, while the palate is rounded and supple, revealing layers of raspberry, blackberry and vanilla. A poised balance between fresh acidity and polished tannins gives the wine both energy and structure, with its long ageing in oak contributing to a smooth, harmonious finish.
Enjoyable now with decanting, the 2021 has the concentration and balance to develop further in bottle. With careful cellaring, it should gain additional complexity and softness over the coming years.
Production
Sourced from the steep, historic slopes of Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône, this cuvée reflects the region’s renowned terroir and traditional style. The grapes undergo regular punching down to keep the skins and fruit in contact with the fermenting juice, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in closed stainless-steel tanks for almost three weeks. The wine is then matured for at least 36 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, allowing the oak to soften and complement the fruit without overshadowing its character.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for game and red meats, this Côte-Rôtie is especially well suited to venison, roast lamb, beef or richly flavoured stews. Its savoury depth also pairs beautifully with mature and hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, and decant for around one hour before serving to allow the aromas and texture to open fully.
Producer
Founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, E. Guigal has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected wine houses. Now led by the third generation, the family combines a deep respect for tradition with continual investment in quality and expertise. Since 2003, Guigal has also crafted its own barrels at the historic Château d’Ampuis, while the acquisition of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017 strengthened its presence across both the Northern and Southern Rhône.
