Description
E. Guigal’s Saintes Pierres de Nalys is a refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape from one of the Southern Rhône’s most celebrated appellations. The 2022 vintage combines generous fruit, supple tannins and refreshing balance, while reflecting the character of the historic Nalys estate, which Guigal acquired in 2017.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a clear, deep ruby-red colour. Its elegant nose opens with fragrant notes of red fruit, complemented by a subtle sense of Southern Rhône warmth and spice. On the palate, it is rich and generous, with a broad, supple tannic structure and a pleasing freshness that keeps the wine beautifully balanced rather than heavy.
Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant fruit and smooth texture, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape also has the structure to develop further complexity with several years of bottle age. Properly stored, it should mature gracefully over the medium term.
Production
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before vinification in temperature-controlled tanks at approximately 28–30°C. The wine undergoes an extended maceration of around four weeks, allowing it to develop depth, colour and structure. It is then matured for 18 months in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and large oak foudres, with approximately 10% of the ageing taking place in foudres.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for a selection of charcuterie, this full-bodied Rhône red is also well suited to grilled red meats, roast lamb and a plateau of mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for approximately 30–60 minutes is recommended when serving the wine young, both to open its aromas and to soften its structure.
Producer
Founded in 1945 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential and respected wine producers. The house is renowned for its rigorous vineyard work, long ageing practices and distinctive expressions of the region’s great appellations. Its stewardship of the historic Château de Nalys estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape further strengthens Guigal’s connection to one of the Southern Rhône’s most prestigious wine regions.
