Description
E. Guigal’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Nalys Blanc 2023 showcases the refined, generously textured style of one of the Southern Rhône’s most historic appellations. Produced by one of the Rhône Valley’s best-known houses, it combines Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s Mediterranean character with Guigal’s hallmark precision and attention to élevage.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a bright golden hue, with expressive aromas of white flowers, ripe orchard fruit, citrus and subtle Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it offers a rounded, full-bodied texture balanced by fresh acidity, with flavours of pear, peach, citrus and gently nutty or mineral nuances.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is often enjoyable in its youth for its aromatic freshness and supple fruit, while well-made examples can develop greater honeyed, nutty and waxy complexity over several years. The 2023 should be approachable now, with further development possible depending on storage conditions.
Production
The Château de Nalys vineyards lie in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the Southern Rhône, where warm Mediterranean conditions, abundant sunshine and the region’s characteristic stony soils help produce richly flavoured wines. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is traditionally made from a blend of permitted white Rhône varieties, which bring a balance of floral perfume, body, freshness and texture. Guigal’s cellar-focused approach aims to preserve the fruit and freshness of the vintage while allowing the wine to gain depth through careful maturation.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its richness and freshness make it a natural partner for grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, seafood risotto, roast poultry, veal and creamy vegetable dishes. It can also complement Mediterranean cuisine, including herb-roasted vegetables and dishes featuring fennel or saffron. Decanting is not essential when the wine is young, although a short period in a carafe can help open its aromas; older bottles benefit from gentle decanting if sediment is present.
Producer
Founded in 1945 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers, with a reputation built on meticulous vineyard selection, extended maturation and consistently high-quality wines. The estate Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was acquired by Guigal in 2017, adding an important Southern Rhône property to its portfolio. The estate’s wines reflect the historic identity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while benefiting from Guigal’s considerable experience across the Rhône.
