Description
E. Guigal’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Nalys 2020 combines the warmth and depth of the Southern Rhône with the precision and restraint associated with one of France’s most respected wine houses. Deeply coloured, powerful yet elegant, it stands out for its intense berry character, refined texture and carefully balanced use of oak. Château de Nalys is a historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate brought into the Guigal family in 2017, adding an important Southern Rhône chapter to the producer’s celebrated history.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, dark red colour with impressive concentration. On the nose, expressive aromas of ripe red and black berries are layered with subtle spice and generous Southern Rhône warmth. The palate is beautifully composed, offering richness and power alongside silky tannins and an elegant, well-defined finish.
Although approachable with decanting, the 2020 vintage has the structure and concentration to develop further in bottle. Its fruit, spice and polished tannins should allow it to age gracefully for many years, gaining additional complexity and savoury depth over time.
Production
The grapes come from the diverse, stony and mineral-rich soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where warm Mediterranean conditions encourage full ripeness while the varied terroir helps preserve balance and complexity. Guigal works with low yields and a nature-conscious approach in the vineyards. Fermentation takes place in conical wooden vats over approximately four weeks, followed by 18 months of maturation, with around 30% of the wine aged in oak, including barrels and larger foudres. This measured élevage adds structure and spice without overshadowing the fruit.
Food & Serving
A natural match for roasted or grilled lamb, beef, venison and other richly flavoured red meats, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape also pairs beautifully with Provençal stews, duck, hearty mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours before serving when drinking young; older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the family-run estate has grown from its Côte Rôtie roots into one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers. Guigal is particularly renowned for its single-vineyard Côte Rôtie wines from La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque, while its portfolio also includes acclaimed wines from Condrieu, Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today, Marcel Guigal leads the company, with the third generation, Philippe, overseeing winemaking. The house is recognised for low yields, careful vineyard work and a restrained cellar approach that places the character of the terroir at the centre of the wine.
