Description

Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Auslese 1944 is a rare piece of German wine history from one of the Pfalz’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced during the Second World War, this mature Riesling combines the prestige of the Forster Jesuitengarten site with the remarkable collectability of a wartime vintage. Its 0.7-litre bottle makes it an exceptional choice for collectors, historic-wine enthusiasts and memorable occasions.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden hue, although the precise colour and condition may vary with age and storage. Mature aromas of dried peach, apricot, honey and preserved citrus are complemented by hints of spice, wax and developed mineral character. On the palate, the Auslese style offers richness and sweetness balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity. Flavours of ripe stone fruit, honey and candied citrus lead into a long, gently mineral finish. At more than eight decades old, the wine should be approached as a historic bottle: its condition and vitality will depend greatly on provenance, fill level, cork and storage history. It is best enjoyed when opened rather than purchased for further long-term ageing.

Production
Forster Jesuitengarten is a highly regarded vineyard in Forst, known for its warm, sheltered conditions and mineral-rich sandstone soils, which can give Riesling both generosity and finesse. As an Auslese, the wine was made from selectively harvested, particularly ripe grapes. Detailed cellar records for this historic vintage are not provided, so the precise vinification and maturation methods cannot be confirmed; the bottle nevertheless represents the traditional Pfalz approach to producing richly concentrated, naturally sweet Riesling.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. This mature Riesling would pair beautifully with fruit-based desserts, apple or apricot tart, crème brûlée and blue or washed-rind cheeses. It can also be served in small pours as an aperitif or alongside a reflective tasting of historic wines. Decanting is not always necessary for an old Riesling and may accelerate its decline; instead, open carefully, taste immediately and decant only briefly if sediment is present and the wine appears sufficiently robust.

Producer
Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is one of the historic estates of the Mittelhaardt in the Pfalz, with roots reaching back to the early eighteenth century. The winery has played an important role in establishing the reputation of top vineyards around Deidesheim and Forst, including the renowned Jesuitengarten. Its wines are valued for combining expressive vineyard character with the precision and ageing potential associated with the finest Pfalz Rieslings.
