Description

Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2020 is a benchmark Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s most legendary vineyards. This is a classic off‑dry style that combines generous ripeness with Mosel’s signature razor‑sharp precision. The late‑harvested fruit delivers extra depth, while the wine remains wonderfully light on its feet. Spätlese – literally “late picked” – means the grapes are left on the vine longer than Kabinett, allowing what Ernst Loosen calls “aromatic ripeness” to fully develop. From the sun‑drenched, slate‑rich slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, this 2020 captures intense stone‑fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a finely etched mineral profile that has made this site world famous since the 19th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese shows a pale lemon color with greenish highlights, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is beautifully expressive: ripe white peach, apricot, and quince mingle with notes of citrus blossom, honeycomb, and a distinctive wet‑slate minerality. With a bit of air, delicate hints of green apple, lime zest, and a whisper of herbs emerge. On the palate, this wine is medium‑sweet but perfectly balanced by a racy, mouthwatering acidity. Juicy stone fruits and Meyer lemon glide across the tongue, layered with floral tones and a salty, slate‑driven backbone. The texture is silky yet lifted, with impressive length and a finish that tapers slowly, leaving lingering notes of citrus, orchard fruits, and mineral spice. While already charming and accessible in its youth, this Spätlese has excellent aging potential; over 10–20 years, it will develop deeper honeyed, nutty and petrol nuances while maintaining its freshness.

Production
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s most iconic steep vineyards, with dramatic, south‑facing slopes that rise up from the river and catch the sun like a natural amphitheater. The soils are dominated by weathered blue Devonian slate, which stores warmth and imparts the hallmark smoky, stony minerality to the Riesling. The vines here are mostly old and deeply rooted, helping them draw nuance and intensity from the thin, rocky terrain. Grapes for the Spätlese are selectively hand‑harvested in multiple passes, with pickers choosing only perfectly ripe, late‑picked bunches that show optimal aromatic development. In the cellar, Dr. Loosen works with a gentle, minimalist philosophy: the fruit is carefully pressed, the must is allowed a cool, slow fermentation (often with natural yeasts) to preserve delicacy and fine aromatics, and a portion is typically raised in traditional large old oak casks (Fuder) on fine lees. Fermentation is stopped at the point where the ideal interplay of sweetness, alcohol, and acidity is achieved, resulting in a wine that is both richly flavored and finely balanced.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese style is exceptionally versatile at the table. Its gentle sweetness and bright acidity make it a superb match for spicy Asian dishes (Thai curries, Szechuan cuisine), aromatic Indian recipes, and dishes with ginger, chili, or lemongrass. It also pairs beautifully with rich pâtés, roasted poultry with fruit accents, glazed pork, and salty soft cheeses like blue or washed‑rind styles. For a classic regional match, serve it alongside pork loin with apple or onion tart. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. Young bottles do not require long decanting, but opening 20–30 minutes before serving or gently swirling in the glass will help the aromas unfold. As the wine ages and gains complexity, a short decant can help it fully express its layered bouquet.

Producer
Dr. Loosen is one of Germany’s most renowned Riesling estates, with more than 200 years of family history on the steep slopes of the Mosel. When Ernst Loosen took over in the late 1980s, he shifted the focus to low yields, old vines, and meticulous vineyard work, propelling the estate to international fame. Many of the vineyards, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, are classified as Grosse Lage (grand cru) and feature ungrafted, old Riesling vines that produce intensely characterful fruit. The estate has played a pivotal role in reestablishing classic, terroir‑driven Mosel Riesling on the world stage, from bone‑dry Grosses Gewächs to delicately sweet Prädikat wines like Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese. Dr. Loosen has earned top ratings from leading wine critics and is widely regarded as a reference point for Mosel Riesling, consistently showcasing how elegance, minerality, and purity of fruit can coexist with remarkable aging potential.
