Description
A rare and beautifully matured Mosel Riesling, this 1991 Beerenauslese Goldkapsel from Bernkasteler Alte Badstube am Doctorberg shows exactly why the Prüm tradition is so revered. Bottled from long château storage in 2021, it offers collectors and sweet-wine lovers a chance to enjoy a wine of remarkable depth, elegance, and provenance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shines with a deep golden hue that signals both age and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe peach, apricot, candied citrus, honey, and subtle floral and mineral notes.
On the palate, it is luxuriously sweet yet finely balanced by Mosel acidity, giving the wine lift and precision rather than heaviness. The finish is long, polished, and lingering, with the kind of harmony that only comes from superb fruit and patient aging. This style has excellent longevity, and the wine is already drinking beautifully now.
Production
The grapes come from Bernkastel’s Alte Badstube am Doctorberg, a classic Mosel site known for its steep slopes, cool climate, and slate-driven soils that give Riesling its trademark vibrancy and mineral edge. Beerenauslese is made only from individually selected berries at exceptional ripeness, harvested by hand to capture maximum concentration and purity. The wine’s balance of natural sweetness and acidity reflects both the site and the meticulous selection process.
Food & Serving
Best served well chilled, around 8–10°C, this Riesling is a superb partner for crème brûlée, cheesecake, tarte Tatin, or fresh stone fruit. It also works beautifully with blue cheese or foie gras if you prefer a richer, savory pairing. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short rest in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic range.
Producer
Dr. Heidemanns Bergweiler, now linked to the Zach. Prüm Erben legacy, is rooted in one of the Mosel’s most respected winemaking traditions. The Prüm name is closely associated with some of the region’s most celebrated Rieslings, and the estate continues that reputation through wines defined by precision, finesse, and long aging potential. This cuvée reflects the historic strength of the Mosel and the enduring quality of its finest sweet wines.
