Description

Lagar de Burmester Douro 2023 is a characterful red wine from Portugal’s dramatic Douro Valley, combining ripe fruit with the region’s distinctive freshness and structure. It carries the Burmester name, a producer with roots reaching back to the 18th century and a long association with the wines of northern Portugal.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour. On the nose, expect inviting aromas of ripe dark berries, plums and cherries, complemented by subtle floral and gently spicy notes. The palate is generous and fruit-driven, with balanced acidity, smooth tannins and a fresh, rounded finish. The 2023 vintage is approachable in its youth and well suited to enjoying now. Its fruit, acidity and tannic structure should allow it to develop further over the next few years when stored in a cool, dark place.

Production
Produced in the Douro, one of Portugal’s most historic wine regions, the wine reflects the valley’s warm, dry climate and steep schist soils, which encourage concentrated fruit while retaining freshness. Lagar de Burmester is made from traditional Douro red varieties and vinified to preserve the fruit-forward character and approachable structure of the vintage. Specific grape proportions and harvesting details are not provided.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool at around 16–18°C. It is a versatile partner for grilled or roasted red meats, pork, sausages, hearty stews and mature cheeses. The wine is generally ready to drink without decanting, although 20–30 minutes in a decanter or a generous glass can help open its aromas before serving.

Producer
The Burmester name derives from the German word “Burgmeester”, meaning mayor, and the family originally came from Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading business in London as Burmester & Nash. The company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities became highly regarded in London, a legacy reflected in Burmester Road in Wimbledon. Today, Burmester remains closely associated with the wine heritage of the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia.
