Description

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese 2003 is a benchmark German Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most iconic vineyard sites. This is a noble, late-harvest wine that marries crystalline precision with the generosity of the warm 2003 vintage. Silky, finely etched and remarkably long on the finish, it shows just how gracefully top Spätlese can evolve in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese shows a deep lemon-gold hue, reflecting both its age and concentration. The nose opens with flinty minerality and smoked stone, then layers in ripe white orchard fruits—pear, apple and white peach—alongside hints of citrus oil, honeycomb and delicate spice. With time in the glass, more mature nuances emerge: dried apricot, chamomile, a touch of beeswax and subtle red berry notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet wonderfully silky, gliding across the tongue with a seamless, “angle-free” texture. Sweetness and vibrant acidity are beautifully balanced, giving both lift and length. Flavours of white peach, ripe apple and mirabelle plum mingle with redcurrant, gentle baking spice and a cool, stony undercurrent from the Brücke site. At this stage of maturity, the wine shows both fresh fruit and evolved, tertiary complexity, with an unusually long, resonant finish. Well cellared bottles can still drink beautifully now, though it is at or near its peak and best enjoyed over the next few years.

Production
Oberhäuser Brücke is a tiny, steep, south-facing vineyard on the banks of the Nahe River, famed for its heat-retaining soils of grey slate, volcanic rock and weathered stone. This unique terroir delivers both ripeness and striking minerality, even in a warm year like 2003. Dönnhoff harvests by hand in multiple passes (Selektive Lese), picking only perfectly ripe, late-harvest Riesling grapes for the Spätlese. After gentle pressing, the must ferments slowly—traditionally in a mix of stainless steel and large, old German oak casks—using predominantly natural yeasts. Fermentation is stopped at the ideal balance of sweetness and acidity, preserving both purity of fruit and the signature finesse of the site.

Food & Serving
This mature Spätlese is superb with refined dishes that play on both sweetness and spice: think Thai or Vietnamese cuisine with aromatic herbs and a mild to moderate chili heat, roast duck with an Asian glaze, or veal and pork dishes with fruit-based sauces. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses, blue cheeses and patés, as well as fruit tarts and not-too-sweet desserts based on apple, pear or stone fruits. Serve lightly chilled, around 9–11°C, to highlight its aromatics without muting its complexity. A gentle decant or allowing the wine 20–30 minutes in the glass can help it fully open and reveal its layered bouquet.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling producers, a family estate in the Nahe whose reputation has been shaped over generations and elevated to world-class status under Helmut Dönnhoff. The winery is known for its meticulous work in some of the region’s finest steep-slope vineyards, including Oberhäuser Brücke, Hermannshöhle and Dellchen. Dönnhoff’s wines are celebrated for their incredible balance, purity and expression of site, regularly earning top scores from international critics and featuring on leading wine lists worldwide. Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese, in particular, has become a reference point for elegant, ageworthy German Riesling.
