Description

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese GK 2023 in demi format (37.5 cl) is a jewel of German sweet Riesling, crafted from meticulously selected, late-harvested fruit along the Nahe River. This Goldkapsel Auslese is all about finesse over opulence, offering an exquisite balance of crystalline sweetness and electric acidity. Sourced from the tiny, revered Oberhäuser Brücke vineyard, it continues a long tradition of some of Germany’s most elegant and age-worthy noble-sweet wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2023 Auslese shines a pale, shimmering lemon-gold, with a youthful brightness that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is delicate yet precise, with cool notes of icy Reine Claude plum compote, freshly grated lemon zest and juice, subtle passionfruit leaf, and whispers of white blossom. Nothing feels heavy or sticky; instead, the aromas unfold with a gentle, refined lift. On the palate, the wine is sweet but wonderfully light on its feet: concentrated and silky, yet with a slender, taut core. Layers of ripe stone fruit, citrus curd, and a touch of exotic fruit are wrapped in a spine of racy, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything impeccably focused. The finish is long, pure, and lemon-toned, leaving an impression of extreme elegance and restraint rather than sheer richness. With its structure and balance, this Auslese GK has excellent aging potential, likely developing added complexity of honey, dried apricot, and spice over 20–30 years or more.

Production
Oberhäuser Brücke is a tiny, steep, riverside vineyard in the Nahe, famous for its sheltered position, deep soils, and excellent ripening conditions for Riesling. The site’s combination of slate-influenced and alluvial soils, plus the moderating influence of the Nahe River, allows grapes to reach high ripeness while retaining remarkable freshness. In 2023, the Riesling was predominantly harvested at high natural ripeness with around 10–15% botrytised berries carefully selected by hand. The fruit was pressed gently in a traditional basket press over several hours, allowing the juice to run off drop by drop without bursting the grape skins, preserving delicacy and purity. Fermentation and élevage are carried out with Dönnhoff’s customary precision, aiming to capture the vineyard’s signature clarity and balance in a sweet, yet finely etched, style.

Food & Serving
This Auslese GK is superb with refined desserts featuring stone fruits, citrus, or subtle tropical notes—think lemon tart, poached pears, or a delicate almond cake with apricots. It also pairs beautifully with blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton) and can be a luxurious partner to foie gras or rich pâtés, where its sweetness and acidity cut through the richness. For a more adventurous match, try it alongside mildly spicy Asian dishes with aromatic spices rather than intense heat. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C; decanting is generally not necessary, though giving it a few minutes in the glass to unfold its aromas is very rewarding.

Producer
Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling estates, a benchmark name on the Nahe and a reference point worldwide for precision, purity, and terroir expression. The family has been growing vines in the region for over 250 years, with Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius elevating the estate to international acclaim. Working some of the Nahe’s greatest vineyards—such as Oberhäuser Brücke, Hermannshöhle, and Dellchen—Dönnhoff crafts wines that consistently earn top scores and are prized by collectors for their elegance, balance, and longevity. The Oberhäuser Brücke Auslesen, in particular, are celebrated as some of the most refined noble-sweet Rieslings produced anywhere in Germany.
