Description
Dönnhoff’s Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2021, here in a half-bottle format (37.5 cl), is a benchmark German sweet wine from one of Nahe’s most revered sites. Picked on the same day as the estate’s Großes Gewächs and Spätlese, this Auslese is shaped by delicately shriveled botrytised berries that bring both richness and remarkable finesse. It captures the interplay of sweetness, laser-focused acidity, and salty minerality that has made Oberhäuser Brücke legendary among Riesling lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese GK shows a shimmering pale gold hue with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with pure, zesty lemon and lime, moving into white peach, pear, and mandarin oil, wrapped in fine honeyed nuances and subtle botrytis notes of saffron, candied citrus peel, and chamomile. A delicate floral character and a cool, slate-driven minerality run through the bouquet, keeping everything crystalline and lifted.
On the palate, this Auslese is rich yet incredibly filigreed and precise. Layers of ripe stone fruit, citrus, and pineapple mingle with acacia honey, lemon curd, and a fine, smoky-saline undertone from the Brücke terroir. Despite its notable sweetness, the wine is carried by piercing, energetic acidity that creates an almost electric tension and a long, salty, mouth‑watering finish with a spicy, citrus-zest snap. At only about 8% alcohol, it feels weightless yet intense. This is a wine with outstanding aging potential: it will develop complex notes of dried apricot, candied citrus, honeycomb, and petrol over 20–30 years or more in a good cellar, while remaining utterly drinkable in its youth for those who enjoy vibrant, primary fruit.
Production
Oberhäuser Brücke is a tiny, steep, south-facing vineyard directly above the Nahe River, benefiting from the river’s moderating influence and excellent sun exposure. The soils are predominantly weathered slate and volcanic rock with some loam, giving the wines their hallmark tension between ripeness and salty minerality. In 2021, the Auslese GK was harvested by hand on 8 November, with meticulous, selective picking of finely shriveled, botrytised Riesling berries at perfect late-harvest ripeness. At Dönnhoff, fermentation typically proceeds with natural yeasts in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and traditional large German oak casks (Stück and Doppelstück), with fermentation stopped at the ideal balance of sweetness and acidity. The result is an exquisitely pure, low-alcohol, naturally sweet Riesling that expresses both the noble rot and the unique character of Oberhäuser Brücke.
Food & Serving
This Auslese GK is superb as a contemplative dessert wine on its own, but it shines with blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton), foie gras, and rich pâtés, where its sweetness and acidity cut through the fat. It also pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts—apricot tart, lemon meringue pie, baked apples, or almond cake—as well as lightly spicy Asian dishes, such as Thai or Vietnamese cuisine with chili and citrus accents. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C in small white wine or Riesling glasses to showcase its aromatics and freshness. Decanting is generally not necessary; if the wine appears slightly closed on opening, a brief splash into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help it unfurl.
