Description

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2018 (demi 37.5 cl) is a benchmark German sweet wine from one of the Nahe’s most prized single vineyards. This is a delicate yet intensely flavored Auslese that balances ripe richness with remarkable clarity and freshness. Offered in half-bottle format, it’s ideal for special occasions, indulgent desserts, or cellaring in smaller quantities.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale golden color with brilliant highlights that hint at both youth and concentration. The nose is crystal clear and finely etched: aromas of ripe stone fruits (apricot, white peach) and citrus zest mingle with floral notes, crushed slate, and a subtle spicy complexity. There’s a distinctive cool, mineral lift that keeps everything feeling precise and elegant. On the palate, this Auslese is lush yet playful, gliding across the tongue with layers of sweet, ripe fruit—think candied lemon, apricot compote, and mirabelle—balanced by piercing, slate-driven acidity. It feels both concentrated and weightless, with a sense of purity and tension that “sings and dances on a knife’s edge.” The finish is long, refined, and mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of citrus, herbs, and wet stone. While already beautiful, the 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese Goldkapsel has excellent aging potential and will continue to gain complexity and nuance over 15–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Oberhäuser Brücke is a tiny, south-facing monopole vineyard owned exclusively by the Dönnhoff family, tucked along the Nahe River on steep, sheltered slopes. The terroir is characterized by weathered grey slate and volcanic elements over rocky subsoils, giving the wines their signature precision, aromatic lift, and mineral intensity. Grapes for the Auslese Goldkapsel are harvested meticulously by hand in multiple passes, selecting only perfectly ripe and botrytized Riesling berries at optimal concentration. In the cellar, Dönnhoff works with a light touch: gentle pressing, cool, slow fermentation (often in traditional large German oak casks and/or stainless steel), and long, calm maturation on fine lees help preserve the wine’s purity, finesse, and natural balance between sweetness and acidity.

Food & Serving
This Auslese Goldkapsel is a superb match for fruit-based desserts such as lemon tart, apricot tart, baked apples, or a simple plate of ripe stone fruits. It also shines with blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton, Gorgonzola) and creamy, mild cheeses, and can work beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes, foie gras, or pâté where sweetness and acidity provide contrast. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10 °C in a white wine or small dessert wine glass to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help the wine unfurl its more delicate floral and mineral notes.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling estates, with family roots in the Nahe region dating back to the 18th century. Under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the winery has become synonymous with precision-crafted Riesling that captures the character of each individual site. Their holdings include some of the Nahe’s greatest vineyards, among them Oberhäuser Brücke, Hermannshöhle, and Dellchen, and their wines regularly feature at the very top of international rankings and critics’ lists. Dönnhoff’s reputation for meticulous vineyard work and restrained, terroir-driven winemaking has made them a reference point not only in the Nahe but in the wider world of fine German wine.
