Description
Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs 2023 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered grand cru vineyards. Sourced from a steep, south-facing slate slope first planted in 1949, this wine combines crystalline purity with remarkable depth and finesse. It is a textbook expression of Nahe Riesling at the highest level, where power is delivered through precision, not weight.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Hermannshöhle GG shows a luminous, pale golden color that hints at both concentration and youth. The nose is lifted and detailed, opening with citrus peel—grapefruit, lemon zest and a touch of orange oil—layered over crushed citrus leaves, smoky slate and subtle, spicy herbal notes. There’s an almost ethereal, stony perfume that speaks clearly of its steep, rocky origin.
On the palate, the wine is beautifully dry (knastør), tightly wound and linear, with razor-sharp focus. A core of citrus—lime, lemon and pink grapefruit—is framed by cool, salty minerality and a subtle, phenolic grip from the tiny berries and thicker skins. The texture is sleek and tensile rather than opulent, with incredible concentration at just 12.5% alcohol. The finish is long, vibrating with stone, citrus zest and energy, promising superb development over time. While already thrilling in its youth, this Grosses Gewächs will gain complexity and harmony over 10–20 years in the cellar, and likely beyond in ideal conditions.
Production
Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle is a legendary, steep, south-facing site on the Nahe, dominated by dark, volcanic slate interspersed with a few limestone veins. This poor, rocky soil forces the old Riesling vines—planted in 1949—to dig deep for nutrients and water, resulting in naturally low yields of tiny, intensely flavored berries with a higher skin-to-juice ratio. Harvest is carried out by hand, often in multiple passes, to select only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Dönnhoff works with a gentle, minimalist philosophy: careful pressing, slow and cool fermentation—typically in a combination of stainless steel and large, traditional German oak casks (Stück or Fuder)—and extended time on fine lees to build texture without masking the site’s character. The result is a precise, terroir-driven Grosses Gewächs that captures the pure essence of slate and citrus.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic dishes. Think poached or grilled fish with citrus and herbs, sashimi and crudo, shellfish (especially scallops, oysters and langoustines), grilled prawns, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine such as sushi, ceviche, Thai salads or Vietnamese dishes with lime and fresh herbs. It also shines with white asparagus, goat cheese, and delicate poultry in light cream or citrus-based sauces. Serve at 9–11°C, slightly cooler if young to emphasize tension, and allow it to warm gently in the glass. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up aromatically and soften its initial grip, but it is not strictly necessary—time in the glass works beautifully.
