Description

Dönnhoff’s 2022 Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Grosses Gewächs is a seriously pedigreed dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most characterful sites. Sourced from a special old-vine parcel within the steep Roxheimer Höllenpfad, this bottling captures the sheer stony precision and depth that have made Dönnhoff a benchmark for German Riesling. It’s a wine that combines crystalline purity with a quietly powerful intensity, built for both contemplation now and graceful aging in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, signaling freshness and youthful energy. The nose opens with a teasing interplay of ripe apricot and citrus oil, still wrapped in a delicate veil of leesy, yeast-derived complexity. As it unfurls, subtle notes of white pepper, crushed stone and a faint hint of iron oxide emerge, adding a savory, mineral edge to the generous fruit. On the palate, this is stony yet rounded, with a core of concentrated lemon and lime oil, complemented by ripe stone fruit and a persistent sense of rock-infused structure. The texture is sleek and dry (knastør), driven by vivid acidity that carries flavors of citrus zest, white pepper and a slightly saline, ferrous minerality long into the finish. Despite its clarity and purity, the wine builds in intensity with every sip, leaving the mouth coated in vibrant citrus peel and fine, tactile minerality. Drinking beautifully in its youth for those who enjoy tension and precision, it has the depth and structure to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining more complexity, spice and tertiary nuances with time.

Production
The Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Grosses Gewächs comes from a particularly rocky parcel within the historic Roxheimer Höllenpfad vineyard in the Nahe, where 40-year-old Riesling vines are rooted deep in weathered Permian sandstone. This poor, stony soil and the steep, well-exposed slopes create low yields and naturally concentrated fruit, expressing the site’s signature spice and minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested in small parcels at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic purity, then gently pressed and fermented with carefully managed, predominantly spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and large traditional German oak casks (Stückfässer). Extended time on the fine lees adds subtle texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s razor-sharp clarity and dry, focused profile.

Food & Serving
This precise, dry Riesling is a superb partner for refined, mineral-driven dishes. Think shellfish (especially oysters, scallops and prawns), ceviche, sushi and sashimi, or delicately prepared white fish with citrus, herbs and butter. It also pairs beautifully with grilled poultry, veal in light cream sauces, and vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or fresh goat cheese. Spicy Asian cuisine with ginger, lemongrass and moderate chili heat can be elevated by the wine’s vibrant acidity and peppery notes. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 9–11°C, to let the aromatics fully express themselves. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up and reveal more of its layered mineral and spice character.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling estates, family-run for over 250 years on the Nahe River, where it has steadily built a reputation for precision, elegance and terroir expression. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the estate has become a benchmark for top-tier dry and sweet Rieslings alike, crafting wines from a collection of renowned sites such as Hermannshöhle, Brücke, Dellchen and Höllenpfad. Their meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sensitive, minimalist cellar philosophy have earned them international acclaim, including consistently high scores from leading critics and a status as a reference producer for the Nahe region. The Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg Grosses Gewächs stands as a showcase of Dönnhoff’s ability to translate a single, distinctive parcel into a wine of shimmering clarity and depth.
