Description
From one of Germany’s most revered Riesling producers, the Dönnhoff Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG 2021 is a profound expression of dry Riesling from the Nahe. Sourced from a tiny two-hectare parcel of 50+ year old vines, it combines quiet depth with striking intensity, showcasing the full character of its red sandstone (Rotliegend) soils. As a Grosses Gewächs, this wine represents the top tier of dry Riesling, uniting old-vine concentration with the precision and finesse that have made Dönnhoff a benchmark estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with a delicate green shimmer, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is deep yet understated, opening slowly with layers of ripe stone fruit—white peach, apricot and mirabelle—interwoven with citrus zest, crushed herbs, and a distinct, finely ground stone and warm red sandstone minerality. Subtle notes of blossom and a faint smoky, flinty edge add further complexity.
On the palate, this Riesling is full-bodied and richly textured, with impressive concentration and a sense of inner power that never tips into heaviness. Ripe, juicy fruit is framed by a firm, elegantly structured backbone and fine, almost tactile tannins from the old vines and extended lees contact. The acidity is ripe, salty and seamlessly integrated, threading through the wine like a fine spine and drawing it out into a very long, refined, and textural finish. Already compelling, the balance of extract, acidity and structure suggests excellent aging potential over 10–15+ years, during which the wine will gain even greater complexity and harmony.
Production
Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg is a steep, sun-exposed Grand Cru site in the Nahe, defined by its Rotliegend red sandstone soils, which lend the wine its distinct spicy, saline minerality and fine, sinewy structure. The vines in this specific two-hectare parcel are more than 50 years old, producing naturally low yields of intensely flavored, small berries. Harvest is carried out by hand, in multiple passes, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. In the cellar, Dönnhoff follows a philosophy of gentle, minimalist intervention: whole berries are carefully pressed, the must is allowed to settle, and fermentation proceeds with native or carefully selected yeasts, typically in a combination of stainless steel and traditional large German oak casks (Stückfass). Extended lees aging adds texture, depth and polish, resulting in a dry Grosses Gewächs that is both powerful and impeccably balanced.
Food & Serving
This Grosses Gewächs is a superb partner for refined, subtly rich cuisine. Try it with poached or roasted white fish, scallops, or langoustines, as well as classic dishes like veal in cream sauce, roasted chicken with herbs, or fine pork dishes with light jus. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired dishes that balance spice, acidity and umami—think lightly spiced sashimi, Thai seafood, or ginger-lime sauces. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its precision and minerality. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the nose to open and the texture to fully unfurl; mature bottles can be served directly from the bottle with a gentle pour.
Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff, based in Oberhausen on the Nahe, is one of Germany’s most celebrated estates and a global reference for top-quality Riesling. The Dönnhoff family has been growing vines in the Nahe for over 250 years, but it was under Helmut Dönnhoff—and now his son Cornelius—that the estate rose to international prominence, earning a reputation for wines of extraordinary precision, purity and longevity. With holdings in some of the Nahe’s greatest sites, including Hermannshöhle, Brücke, Dellchen and Höllenpfad, Dönnhoff has played a key role in putting the region on the world fine wine map. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, such as Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg, consistently rank among the finest dry Rieslings produced anywhere, reflecting both the uniqueness of the Nahe’s terroir and the estate’s meticulous craftsmanship.
