Description
From one of Germany’s most revered Riesling producers, the 2020 Dönnhoff Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG is a precise, dry Grosses Gewächs that marries power with poise. Sourced from over 40-year-old vines rooted in weathered sandstone, it offers a vivid expression of Nahe terroir with remarkable clarity and tension. This is a single-vineyard Riesling of real pedigree, crafted to age gracefully while already delivering impressive depth and charm in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG shows a pale, bright lemon color with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is clear, lifted and elegant, opening with ripe citrus and stone fruits—think yellow plum, white peach and Meyer lemon—layered with notes of crushed stone, fresh herbs and a subtle floral lift. A cool, saline minerality runs through the bouquet, giving it a quietly serious, refined character.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied for a dry Riesling yet impeccably balanced, with intense fruit concentration framed by a firm, linear acidity. Ripe, bright fruit is carried on a tightly wound, mineral core that feels both silky and driven, leading into a long, polished finish with a lingering salty snap. Still youthful and slightly restrained, it has plenty of structure and energy, promising increasing complexity, finesse and elegance over the next 8–15 years, and likely beyond in good cellaring conditions.
Production
The Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg vineyard in the Nahe is characterized by steep slopes and weathered sandstone soils that impart a distinctive, spicy minerality and precision to the Riesling. The fruit for this Grosses Gewächs comes from old vines, over 40 years of age, which naturally yield small, concentrated berries. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only optimally ripe and perfectly healthy grapes reach the winery. At the estate, the grapes are gently pressed, and the must is allowed to ferment slowly—typically with predominantly natural yeasts—in stainless steel and/or large traditional German oak casks (Stückfass) to preserve purity, texture and site expression. The wine then rests on its fine lees to gain complexity and polish before bottling as a dry, Grosses Gewächs Riesling.
Food & Serving
This structured, dry Riesling pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its mineral backbone and vibrant acidity. Think delicately prepared seafood such as poached or grilled turbot, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or freshwater fish with beurre blanc. It also shines alongside white asparagus, poultry with light citrus or herb sauces, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with ginger, lemongrass or light soy-based sauces. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its tension and aromatics, and consider a short decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth to help the wine unfurl its layers of fruit and minerality.
Producer
Dönnhoff is a benchmark estate in Germany’s Nahe region and one of the country’s most acclaimed Riesling producers. The family has been growing grapes in the area for over 250 years, with the modern reputation of the winery shaped especially under Helmut Dönnhoff and now continued by his son, Cornelius. Working primarily with steep, slate and sandstone vineyards along the Nahe and its tributaries, Dönnhoff has been instrumental in elevating the region’s global standing through meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking. The estate consistently receives top scores and international recognition for its dry Grosses Gewächs bottlings and its noble-sweet wines alike, cementing its status as a reference point for terroir-driven German Riesling.
