Description

Dönnhoff Felsenberg GG 2022 in magnum format is a top-tier dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic, steep volcanic vineyards. This Grosses Gewächs captures the tension, minerality and luminous precision that have made Dönnhoff a benchmark name in German wine. In the generous 1.5 L bottle, it promises even more complexity and longevity for collectors and serious Riesling lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felsenberg GG is pale lemon with greenish highlights, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is initially a touch restrained, with a faint yeasty note from its élevage, then opens slowly to reveal crushed rock, smoky flint, ripe lime and lemon zest, along with subtle herbal and white blossom nuances. There’s a clear volcanic imprint: an almost tactile stony character that frames the fruit. On the palate the wine is bone dry, tightly focused and intensely mineral. Juicy citrus – lemon, lime and a touch of grapefruit – rides on a backbone of vibrant, finely etched acidity. A distinct salty, stony impression runs through the mid-palate, giving both structure and energy. Despite its concentration and depth, the wine feels weightless and linear, with a cool, crystalline texture that seems to stretch on and on. The finish is long, bright and persistent, with lingering salinity and citrus. In magnum, this has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully now for its precision and energy, but will gain even more complexity over 10–15+ years, developing smoke, honeyed and herbal nuances while retaining its spine of freshness.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard above Schlossböckelheim is a steep, terraced slope of volcanic porphyry and melaphyr, a unique terroir that gives the wines their trademark smoky minerality and saline edge. The vines cling to poor, stony soils, forcing deep root systems and naturally low yields, which in turn concentrate aroma and structure in the Riesling grapes. At Dönnhoff, harvesting is done by hand, often in multiple passes, to select perfectly ripe, healthy clusters at optimal physiological maturity. The Grosses Gewächs is typically fermented slowly with ambient or carefully selected yeasts in stainless steel and large traditional German Stück or Doppelstück casks, at cool temperatures to preserve finesse and aromatic clarity. Extended time on fine lees adds texture and depth without sacrificing the wine’s linear, energetic profile, resulting in a dry Riesling that is both powerful and finely chiseled.

Food & Serving
This bone-dry, mineral Riesling is a superb match for refined seafood and dishes where texture and subtlety matter. Think grilled or roasted turbot, sea bass or cod, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or shellfish such as lobster and langoustines, especially with citrus, beurre blanc or light herbal sauces. It also pairs beautifully with fine white meat dishes (veal, free-range chicken, guinea fowl) and delicately spiced Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with ginger, lemongrass or light soy-based sauces. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C. In magnum and at this level of concentration, the wine benefits from a brief decanting of 30–60 minutes in its youth to let the nose open and the texture loosen slightly, while older bottles can be served directly from the bottle with a gentle pour.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling estates, with family roots in the Nahe dating back to the 18th century. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the winery has become synonymous with precision, purity and an almost unmatched expression of terroir, from dry Grosses Gewächs bottlings to world-class sweet wines. Their holdings include many of the Nahe’s greatest sites, such as Felsenberg, Hermannshöhle and Dellchen, each carefully farmed and vinified to highlight its individual character. International critics consistently place Dönnhoff among Germany’s elite producers, and their Grosses Gewächs wines, like the Felsenberg GG, have helped define what top-level, dry German Riesling can be on the world stage.
