Description
Dönnhoff Felsenberg GG 2022 in the generous 3L double magnum format is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered producers. Sourced from the steep, volcanic slopes of Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg in the Nahe, this Grosses Gewächs bottling captures incredible precision, mineral depth, and energy. The larger bottle format enhances its aging potential, making it an outstanding choice for collectors and for the table at special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felsenberg GG shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is initially a touch restrained, with a subtle hint of residual yeast from its élevage, then opening gradually to reveal crushed stone, smoky volcanic minerality, and a fine citrus profile—think zesty lemon, lime peel, and a whisper of white grapefruit—alongside delicate herbal and floral nuances.
On the palate, this is bone-dry, tightly focused, and wonderfully linear, with a pronounced stony saltiness at its core. A vivid, almost electric note of juicy lemon runs through the wine, intensifying the impression of salinity and minerality. The texture combines great concentration with an almost weightless finesse, carried by a cool, crystal-clear acidity that feels both calm and luminous. The finish is long, pure, and seemingly endless, with a gliding, energetic quality that promises significant development over 10–20+ years, especially in this 3L double magnum format.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in Schlossböckelheim is one of the Nahe’s great grand-cru sites, a steep, south-facing slope of volcanic origin rich in porphyry and melaphyr. This unique terroir imparts the wine’s signature smoky minerality, saline edge, and racy structure. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from old, low-yielding vines, ensuring perfect selection on the steep terraces. At the winery, the Riesling is gently pressed and fermented with great care—often with native or carefully chosen yeasts—at controlled temperatures, then matured on its fine lees to build texture and complexity while preserving purity, tension, and the characteristic Felsenberg precision that defines this Grosses Gewächs.
Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic dry Riesling, superb with refined seafood and richly flavored yet elegant dishes. Think grilled or poached turbot, scallops, langoustines, sushi and sashimi, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine such as lemongrass-scented dishes, high-quality tempura, and lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese preparations. It also shines with fine poultry, veal in light citrus or cream sauces, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C to emphasize its precision and minerality. For maximum expression, especially in its youth and given the 3L format, decant for 30–60 minutes to allow the wine’s initially shy nose to unfurl and fully reveal its depth.
Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most acclaimed estates and a reference point for Riesling worldwide. Based in Oberhausen an der Nahe, the family has been cultivating vines in the region for over 250 years, but it is under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius that the estate has achieved global renown. Dönnhoff is celebrated for an exceptional portfolio of grand sites—Felsenberg among them—that consistently produce wines of clarity, balance, and profound terroir expression. Regularly lauded by international critics and collectors, the estate’s Grosses Gewächs bottlings are considered some of the finest dry Rieslings produced anywhere, reinforcing the Nahe’s reputation as one of Germany’s most exciting and diverse wine regions.
