Description

Dönnhoff Felsenberg GG 2018 is a powerful, dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic and celebrated vineyard sites. This is a wine that marries richness and depth with razor-sharp precision, capturing the volcanic character of Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg in every sip. As a Grosses Gewächs (GG), it represents the very top tier of dry Riesling from both estate and region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Felsenberg GG shows a bright, luminous lemon-gold hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot are layered with citrus zest, crushed slate and a distinct flinty, smoky minerality. There’s a saline lift and a subtle herbal nuance that keep the aromatics refined rather than opulent. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and mouthfilling, yet carried by a vibrant spine of acidity and an almost electric mineral tension. Juicy, ripe fruit is interwoven with notes of wet rock, smoke and sea salt, giving a savory, salty-piquant impression on the long finish. Despite its generosity and power in this warm vintage, the wine remains remarkably precise, clean and tightly structured. While already impressive in its youth, this 2018 Felsenberg GG has the structure and extract to age beautifully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in the Nahe is a steep, terraced site rooted in weathered volcanic porphyry, which imparts its signature smoky, flinty minerality and saline edge to the Riesling. Dönnhoff carefully tends these vines by hand, with low yields and meticulous selection to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are harvested—typically by multiple passes through the vineyard. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented slowly with native yeasts, often in a mix of stainless steel and large traditional German oak casks, to preserve purity while allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity. The wine then rests on its fine lees before bottling—here, in July 2019—allowing the GG to knit together and express the full character of this exceptional site.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that shines with richly flavored and refined dishes. Think grilled or roasted shellfish (lobster, scallops, langoustines), turbot or cod with beurre blanc, smoked or poached salmon, or poultry in cream-based sauces. The wine’s salty-mineral backbone also makes it an inspired match for lightly spiced Asian cuisine, such as ginger-scented seafood or delicate Thai dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at about 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and complexity; a brief decant of 30–60 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically in its youth, especially for more serious, contemplative drinking.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered estates and a benchmark for world-class Riesling. Based in the Nahe, the family has been growing vines here for over 200 years, with Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius elevating the domaine to international acclaim. Their holdings include some of the region’s finest sites, such as Felsenberg, Dellchen and Hermannshöhle, each expressing a distinct terroir. Dönnhoff’s wines are regularly cited among Germany’s best, with countless high ratings and accolades from major wine critics. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, like the Felsenberg GG, are considered reference points for dry Riesling, showcasing the precision, depth and mineral clarity that have made the Nahe one of the most exciting white wine regions in the world.

2018 is a generous and approachable, highly rated vintage that is entering an initial drinking phase now. It comes from an old and renowned vineyard on a steep south-facing slope where the vines grow in weathered volcanic soil. The stony ground warms up quickly during the day and produces Riesling wines with intense fruitiness, high acidity, and distinct flinty aromas that are strongly tied to the expression of the site
