Description
Donnafugata La Bella Sedara 2023 is a charming Sicilian red that brings together international varieties and local character in a style that is both approachable and full of personality. Named in homage to the irresistible Angelica Sedàra from Visconti’s "Il Gattopardo," it reflects Donnafugata’s flair for storytelling as much as its talent for making expressive wines from Sicily.
Tasting Notes
Expect a vibrant ruby-red color in the glass, with an inviting bouquet of ripe red berries, dark plums, and subtle spice, lifted by hints of Mediterranean herbs. The blend is designed for immediate pleasure, offering a smooth, juicy palate with soft tannins, fresh acidity, and a balanced finish that makes it easy to enjoy on its own or with food.
The wine’s combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nero d’Avola, and Syrah/Shiraz gives it both roundness and structure, along with a distinctly Sicilian warmth. It is best enjoyed young and fresh, while its lively fruit and supple texture are at their most appealing.
Production
La Bella Sedara is produced in Sicily, with grapes sourced from Donnafugata’s Contessa Entellina area, where warm days, cooling breezes, and varied soils help shape wines with ripeness and freshness in balance. Harvesting is typically carried out carefully to preserve fruit quality, followed by fermentation and maturation in a way that highlights purity of aroma, softness, and the wine’s easy-drinking style.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled meats, roasted poultry, pizza, and Mediterranean fare such as eggplant, olives, and seasoned vegetables. Serve it slightly cool, around 16–18°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief airing can help the aromas open up if desired.
Producer
Donnafugata is one of Sicily’s most recognizable and respected producers, known for combining modern winemaking with deep respect for the island’s culture, landscape, and native grapes. Founded by the Rallo family, the estate has helped elevate Sicily’s profile internationally through wines that are expressive, polished, and full of regional identity. Its labels and names often draw on art, literature, and history, underscoring the producer’s distinctive creative spirit.
