Description
Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2009 Magnum is a striking Tempranillo from one of Spain’s most celebrated modern producers, offering impressive depth, finesse, and value relative to its flagship sibling. Sourced from mature vines near the legendary Barrosso and San Cristóbal parcels, it captures much of the character and prestige of Pingus in a more accessible style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, polished ruby colour with the kind of concentration you’d expect from old-vine Tempranillo. The nose opens with ripe plum, violet, wild herbs, and warm spice, layered with subtle notes from French oak and a mineral, slightly saline edge.
The palate is powerful and generously fruited, yet not overly heavy, with dark plum, spice, and floral tones supported by a fresh, earthy core. Fine-grained tannins sit quietly in the background, while the wine’s underlying acidity and salty minerality give it lift and balance. The 2009 vintage is already expressive, but the magnum format suggests it will continue to develop gracefully over the next decade or more.
Production
Flor de Pingus is made from fruit grown on partly leased vineyards close to the Barrosso and San Cristóbal parcels in Castilla y León, where vines averaging around 60 years old send roots deep into the subsoil. This old-vine material contributes concentration and mineral complexity, while the well-established root systems help the vines withstand the dry summer months.
Winemaking follows Peter Sisseck’s careful, natural-leaning approach, with some whole-cluster fruit included and fermentation taking place in 2,000-litre oak vats. The wine aged for 14 months in a combination of about 30% new French oak and previously used barrels, then was bottled in June 2020 without fining or filtration.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, game, or slow-cooked Iberian dishes such as suckling pig. It also pairs well with aged Manchego and other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least an hour to allow the aromas and texture to fully open.
Producer
Dominio de Pingus, founded by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck, has become one of Spain’s most influential cult wineries and a benchmark for modern Ribera-style Tempranillo. Best known for the iconic Pingus, the estate has earned international acclaim for combining precision, concentration, and purity, with Flor de Pingus widely regarded as a remarkable expression of the same philosophy at a more approachable level.
