Description
Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina 2011 is a rare late release from one of Barolo’s modern legends, sourced from old Nebbiolo vines in the famed Mosconi cru. Bottled in just 2,300 examples, this is a deeply refined Barolo that shows what a decade of patient aging can unlock in great Nebbiolo. It marries the power of a warm vintage with an almost Burgundian sense of detail and finesse, making it a compelling choice for collectors and serious Barolo lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Percristina shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, the classic color gradation of a Barolo entering its prime. The nose is complex and layered: dried red cherry, rose petals and violet mingle with notes of crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, exotic spice, tar, leather and a refined thread of licorice. Hints of underbrush and dried herbs emerge with air, revealing the wine’s evolution and depth.
On the palate, it is both concentrated and filigreed: a core of dried cherry, redcurrant and blood orange is wrapped in fine, persistent tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is silky yet authoritative, with savory notes of anise, tar, cedar, and warm spice carrying through to a long, resonant finish. This 2011 has entered a beautiful drinking window but still has plenty of structure to reward further cellaring. Properly stored, it should continue to develop nuance for another 10–15 years.
Production
Percristina comes from old Nebbiolo vines in the Mosconi cru, one of Monforte d’Alba’s most esteemed sites, known for its calcareous clay soils and sun-drenched, south-facing exposures that naturally yield powerful, structured wines. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the cellar door to ensure only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit makes it into the final cuvée. Fermentation and maceration are extended to draw out color, aromatics, and tannin, followed by long aging in oak and further bottle maturation prior to release. This extended élevage is key to smoothing the edges of this robust vintage and allowing the wine’s inner elegance and Mosconi character to shine.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an outstanding match for rich, savory cuisine: think braised beef shank, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Given its age and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in the coming few years.
Producer
Domenico Clerico was one of the most influential figures of the Barolo renaissance, helping to redefine Monforte d’Alba as a source of profound, ageworthy Nebbiolo. Starting with a small family estate in the 1970s, he gradually assembled parcels in top crus such as Ginestra and Mosconi, and became known for meticulous vineyard work and a thoughtful, quality-driven approach in the cellar. Clerico’s wines, often bridging tradition and modernity, have earned critical acclaim worldwide and are now benchmarks for collectors seeking expressive, terroir-driven Barolo with both power and finesse. Percristina, sourced from old-vine Mosconi, stands among the estate’s most prized and long-lived bottlings.
