Description
Domaine Yannick Amirault’s Bourgueil La Petite Cave 2018 is an elegant Loire Valley red that highlights the refined, savoury character of Cabernet Franc. Combining ripe dark-fruit flavours with polished tannins and a long, complex finish, it reflects the domaine’s long-standing commitment to sustainable vineyard farming. The estate has been in the Amirault family since Yannick took over in 1977, when it covered just 3.4 hectares.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour. On the nose, it offers inviting aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries and cocoa, with a subtle earthy depth. The palate opens softly and gracefully, revealing concentrated dark-fruit flavours supported by refined tannins. Its finish is long, complex and pleasantly structured, with enough freshness and balance to make it enjoyable now while also allowing it to develop further with careful cellaring.
Production
Produced in Bourgueil in France’s Loire Valley, the wine comes from vineyards farmed with a strong focus on ecological balance. No fertilisers have been used since 1983, while grass is allowed to grow between the vine rows, eliminating the need for herbicides; the domaine is organically certified. The grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in conical wooden vats for four weeks, followed by 24 months of maturation in wooden barrels, giving the wine depth and a polished texture without overwhelming its fruit character.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with roast poultry, duck, grilled or roasted pork, sausages, mushroom dishes, or hearty vegetable preparations. Its gentle tannins and ripe fruit also make it a natural match for roast lamb and moderately mature cheeses. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended when serving the wine young, while older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted briefly only if necessary to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Yannick Amirault is a respected family domaine in Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. Yannick Amirault took over the estate in 1977, expanding it from 3.4 hectares to 19 hectares today, including 13 hectares in Bourgueil and 6 in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. Its early move away from fertilisers and herbicides, together with its organic certification, reflects a long-term commitment to responsible viticulture and the expression of the Loire Valley’s Cabernet Franc terroir.
