Description
Domaine Tortochot’s Mazis-Chambertin 2022 is a powerful and distinguished Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin, a village often described as the opening movement of Burgundy’s great symphony. Crafted by one of Gevrey’s long-established winegrowing families, it combines intense fruit, impressive structure and the refined character expected from this exceptional terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby colour, with the concentration and depth associated with Mazis-Chambertin. Its bouquet reveals ripe red fruit alongside notes of liquorice and leather, creating an alluring balance between freshness, richness and savoury complexity.
On the palate, it is powerful and well structured, with excellent length and a firm yet polished character. The tannins remain silky and velvety through the finish, giving the wine both charm and presence. This is a wine with the concentration and balance to develop further in bottle, although careful decanting can make it approachable in its youth.
Production
Produced from Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin’s Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard, the wine reflects the appellation’s ability to combine depth, power and elegance. Domaine Tortochot follows a traditional approach focused on expressing the terroir, with the wine matured for an average of 18 months in new oak barrels. The detailed harvesting and vinification methods are not specified, but the finished wine shows a careful balance between fruit, structure and oak influence.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for 30 minutes to two hours before serving, depending on its stage of development. Its depth makes it an excellent partner for roasted meats, from simple roast dishes to more elaborate preparations, while its refined texture also complements both robust and delicately flavoured game dishes. It is particularly well suited to venison and other richly flavoured game.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots in Gevrey winegrowing stretching back to the 19th century, when Paul Tortochot was a modest vigneron on Place des Marronniers. Today, the domaine is led by his great-granddaughter Chantal, a trained oenologist who represents a new generation of Burgundian winemakers. Her approach combines continuity with a desire to express a traditional Gevrey style—rich in fruit, powerful in structure and supported by lively acidity. The domaine is recognised as one of the better-known producers in Gevrey-Chambertin, a village home to more than 100 winegrowers and celebrated for producing some of Burgundy’s most compelling Pinot Noir.
