Domaine Tortochot’s Mazis-Chambertin 2021 is a distinguished Grand Cru Burgundy from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most celebrated climats. Crafted in the traditional, powerful style associated with the appellation, it combines intense red-fruit character with impressive structure, length and remarkable silkiness. Gevrey-Chambertin has long been regarded as the starting point of Burgundy’s great wines—a sentiment captured by local historian Camille Rodier’s famous words: “Only Gevrey-Chambertin can make great Burgundy possible.”

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby colour, with an expressive nose of ripe red fruits complemented by notes of liquorice and leather. On the palate, it is powerful and well structured, with concentrated fruit, excellent length and the firm yet balanced character expected of a Mazis-Chambertin. Despite its depth, the tannins remain silky and velvety through the finish, lending the wine both charm and finesse. This is a wine with considerable ageing potential and will benefit from patience in bottle as its structure integrates and its aromatic complexity develops. For drinking in its youth, decanting is recommended to reveal its full expression.

Production
Sourced from the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru climat in Gevrey-Chambertin, the wine reflects the appellation’s renowned ability to combine power, depth and elegance. Domaine Tortochot follows a traditional approach designed to express the character of the terroir, with the 2021 wine matured for an average of 18 months in new oak barrels. Food & Serving
Mazis-Chambertin is a natural partner for both refined and substantial cuisine. Serve it with roast beef, lamb, game birds or richly flavoured venison dishes; it is equally appealing alongside simpler roast preparations when the quality of the ingredients takes centre stage. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for around 30 minutes to two hours before serving, depending on its age and how expressive it is on opening.

Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots as winegrowers in Gevrey-Chambertin reaching back to the 19th century, when Paul Tortochot was a modest vigneron on Place des Marroniers. Today, the domaine is led by his great-granddaughter Chantal, a trained oenologist who represents a new generation while maintaining the estate’s traditional identity. Her stated aim is to produce authentic Gevrey-Chambertin wines marked by fruit, power and lively acidity—wines that reward patience. The domaine is regarded as one of the better-known producers in a village home to more than 100 wine estates.
