Description

Domaine Tortochot’s 2004 Mazis-Chambertin is a distinguished Grand Cru Burgundy from Gevrey-Chambertin, a village long regarded as the beginning of the “symphony” of the Côte de Nuits. Made by one of Gevrey’s established family domaines, this is a powerful yet refined Pinot Noir with the depth, structure and longevity associated with the appellation.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with expressive aromas of red fruits, complemented by notes of liquorice and mature leather. On the palate, it is powerful and well structured, offering impressive length and a firm yet harmonious character. Its tannins remain silky and velvety through the finish, lending elegance to the wine’s substantial frame. As a 2004 Burgundy, it is now at a compelling stage of maturity, with developed savoury nuances alongside its fruit profile. It should be enjoyed while these mature characteristics are at their best, although further evolution will depend greatly on storage conditions and provenance.

Production
Sourced from the prestigious Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru terroir in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine reflects the traditional, structured style associated with the domaine. Chantal Tortochot favours wines with abundant fruit, pronounced tannins and refreshing acidity, allowing the character of the site to take centre stage. The wine is matured for an average of 18 months in new oak barrels, contributing depth and polish while retaining its underlying Pinot Noir identity.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool, at approximately 16–18°C, and decant for 30 minutes to two hours before serving, depending on how the wine presents after opening. Its structure and mature savoury notes make it an excellent partner for roasts, from simple preparations to more elaborate dishes, as well as both robust and delicately flavoured game. Roast duck, venison or other refined game dishes would be particularly well suited.

Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with roots in Gevrey-Chambertin extending back to the 19th century, when Paul Tortochot was a modest vigneron at Place des Marroniers. Today, the domaine is led by his great-granddaughter Chantal, a trained oenologist who represents a new generation while preserving the estate’s traditional Gevrey character. Her approach combines continuity with a clear focus on expressing the terroir, producing wines known for their fruit, structure and ageing potential.
