Description
Domaine Tortochot’s Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 2023 captures the classic character of Gevrey-Chambertin: generous fruit, floral lift, firm structure and impressive depth. Produced by a family estate with roots in the village stretching back four generations, it is a powerful yet elegant expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated appellations.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby colour and opens with inviting aromas of ripe red fruit, rose petals and fragrant clove. On the palate, the fruit is complemented by a lively freshness and a pronounced, well-defined structure. Firm tannins provide shape and persistence, while the finish is long, savoury and balanced, revealing the combination of elegance and power for which Gevrey-Chambertin is known.
Although already compelling, this is not a wine intended solely for early drinking. Its concentration, acidity and tannic backbone should allow it to develop greater complexity with age. Decanting in its youth will help reveal its aromatic detail, while a few years in bottle should bring more savoury and earthy nuances.
Production
Les Champeaux is a highly regarded vineyard site in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir benefits from the region’s limestone-rich soils and cool continental climate. Domaine Tortochot’s approach is centred on expressing the character of the terroir, with fruitiness, freshness and structure at the forefront. Specific details of the 2023 harvest and vinification are not provided, but the finished wine reflects a traditional Gevrey style with pronounced tannins and a clear sense of place.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, slow-cooked dishes, this Gevrey-Chambertin works particularly well with braised duck and peas, veal shank with seasonal vegetables, or roast and stuffed goose. Serve lightly cool at approximately 16–18°C. For drinking now, decant for 30–60 minutes to soften the tannins and open the floral and fruit aromas; older bottles are best handled gently and may only need a short period in the glass.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot is a respected family domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin, with a winemaking heritage that can be traced through four generations. The estate’s roots reach back to Paul Tortochot, a vigneron in the village during the 19th century, while today the domaine is led by his great-granddaughter, Chantal Tortochot. A trained oenologist, Chantal represents a new generation of Burgundian winemakers while maintaining a traditional vision of Gevrey-Chambertin: expressive fruit, firm tannins, good acidity and the patience required for the wines to mature.
