Description
Domaine Tortochot’s 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles Vignes is a classic expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated red-wine villages. Made from old-vine Pinot Noir, it combines generous fruit with firm tannins and bright acidity—an elegant yet structured wine that captures the traditional character of Gevrey-Chambertin. The appellation is often described as the opening movement of Burgundy’s great wine symphony, and its importance has long been recognised by local wine figures such as Camille Rodier.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a clear ruby colour, with the depth and concentration associated with old-vine Pinot Noir. On the nose, inviting red-fruit aromas are complemented by the earthy, savoury character typical of Gevrey-Chambertin, creating an impression that is both charming and composed.
On the palate, it is well structured, with a beautiful line of acidity, abundant fruit and firm, persistent tannins. This is not a wine intended solely for early enjoyment: its balance and structure suggest that it will develop greater complexity with time in bottle. Enjoy from around 2027 onwards, or cellar for several more years for a more integrated expression.
Production
The wine comes from the Champerrier climat in Gevrey-Chambertin and is made from old vines, whose naturally lower yields can contribute concentration and depth. The village’s limestone- and clay-influenced soils provide an important foundation for the wine’s freshness, structure and mineral character. Chantal Tortochot’s approach is rooted in a traditional style of Gevrey-Chambertin, aiming to express the terroir through fruit, power and vibrant acidity. Specific harvesting and vinification details for this cuvée have not been provided.
Food & Serving
Its firm structure and savoury depth make it an excellent partner for roast chicken, duck, veal, pork tenderloin and dishes featuring wild mushrooms. It also works beautifully with classic Burgundian preparations, including coq au vin. Serve at 15–16°C. Decanting is not essential for a young bottle, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help soften the tannins and open the aromas; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots as winegrowers in Gevrey-Chambertin reaching back to the 19th century. Today, the domaine is led by Chantal Tortochot, the great-granddaughter of Paul Tortochot, who brings oenological training and a modern commitment to expressing the character of the terroir. With more than a hundred wine estates in the village, Domaine Tortochot is among Gevrey-Chambertin’s better-known producers, recognised for its traditional, age-worthy interpretation of Pinot Noir.
