Description
Domaine Tortochot’s Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles Vignes 2021 is a classic expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated villages, combining bright acidity with firm, finely structured tannins. Made by a domaine that has belonged to the Tortochot family for four generations, it reflects the traditional, full-bodied style for which Gevrey-Chambertin is renowned.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage shows the poised structure and freshness expected from a well-made Gevrey-Chambertin. Its character is defined by appealing red fruit, a refined sense of balance and a firm tannic frame, while the palate is marked by beautiful acidity and impressive depth.
This is a wine with genuine ageing potential rather than one intended solely for immediate drinking. The old-vine character and robust structure should allow it to develop greater complexity and softness with patience in bottle.
Production
Produced from old vines in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine follows Domaine Tortochot’s traditional approach to Pinot Noir: generous fruit, pronounced tannins and refreshing acidity, with the aim of expressing the character of the terroir. Specific details regarding harvesting and vinification were not provided.
Food & Serving
Its firm structure and lively acidity make it a natural partner for roasted or braised poultry, duck, veal, lamb and classic Burgundy dishes such as coq au vin. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 15–17°C. The 2021 can be enjoyed young with a short decant, but allowing it to breathe for 30–60 minutes is recommended; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if sediment is present.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot is one of the better-known domaines of Gevrey-Chambertin and has been in the Tortochot family for four generations. The family’s roots in the village extend back to the 19th century, when Paul Tortochot worked as a modest vigneron at Place des Marroniers. Today, his great-granddaughter Chantal leads the domaine. A trained oenologist and representative of a new generation of Burgundian winemakers, she continues the family tradition while focusing on wines that express Gevrey-Chambertin’s distinctive terroir.
