Description
Domaine Tortochot’s Clos de Vougeot 2023 is a powerful and refined Burgundy red from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most historic Grand Cru vineyards. Clos de Vougeot has been cultivated since the Cistercian monks established the celebrated walled vineyard in the 12th century, and this cuvée combines the site’s pedigree with the traditional, structured style associated with Domaine Tortochot.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, dark purple colour. Its expressive nose opens with aromas of woodland floor and undergrowth, followed by dark berries, coffee and finely judged spicy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous and richly textured, with impressive concentration and a captivating length. Firm tannins provide a long, structured finish, suggesting that the wine will benefit from patience in bottle and develop greater complexity with age.
Production
Clos de Vougeot lies in the Côte de Nuits, where limestone and clay-rich soils contribute both depth and structure to Pinot Noir. The wine is matured for an average of 18 months in new oak barrels, allowing its dark fruit, spice and earthy character to develop alongside a firm tannic framework. As with any structured Burgundy of this stature, careful cellaring will reward the patient drinker.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for both elaborate and simply prepared roasts, this Clos de Vougeot also pairs beautifully with richly flavoured game, from venison to wild boar. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for between 30 minutes and two hours before serving, depending on the wine’s stage of development. Younger bottles will particularly benefit from extended aeration to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic depth.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots as vignerons in Gevrey reaching back to the 19th century. Today, Chantal Tortochot, the great-granddaughter of Paul Tortochot, leads the domaine. A trained oenologist and member of a new generation of Burgundian winemakers, she focuses on expressing terroir through wines marked by generous fruit, pronounced tannins and refreshing acidity. The domaine is closely associated with Gevrey-Chambertin, one of Burgundy’s most important village appellations, and has earned recognition for its traditional, ageworthy interpretation of Pinot Noir.
