Domaine Tortochot, Chambertin 2021

Domaine Tortochot’s Chambertin 2021 is a distinguished Burgundy red from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards. Made in the traditional Gevrey-Chambertin style, it combines expressive red-fruit character with firm tannins, lively acidity and the depth expected from this historic terroir. As local winegrower Camille Rodier famously observed, “Only Gevrey-Chambertin can make great Burgundy possible.”

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with powerful aromas of ripe red fruits, complemented by notes of liquorice and leather. On the palate, cherry and brandy-like nuances emerge alongside a structured, full-bodied profile, pronounced tannins and refreshing acidity. Its balance of fruit, power and savoury complexity gives it considerable ageing potential, and it will benefit from patience in the cellar as the tannins soften and the aromas develop further.

Production
Sourced from the renowned Chambertin terroir in Gevrey-Chambertin, the wine reflects the area’s classic combination of limestone and clay soils and its ability to produce powerful yet finely structured Pinot Noir. Domaine Tortochot follows a traditional approach designed to preserve the character of the site, with the wine matured for an average of 18 months in oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak. The 2021 vintage’s freshness complements the wine’s natural concentration and structure.

Food & Serving
With its pronounced tannins and savoury depth, this Chambertin is especially well suited to terrines and pâtés, roasted offal, roast pork, pork in a rich sauce and braised veal. It also pairs beautifully with Burgundy’s characterful cheeses, particularly Époisses and Langres. Serve at 13–14°C. Decanting is recommended when opening the wine young, while older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots as winegrowers in Gevrey reaching back to the 19th century. Today, the estate is led by Chantal Tortochot, the great-granddaughter of Paul Tortochot, who combines oenological training with a commitment to expressing the local terroir. The domaine is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s recognised producers, crafting traditional Pinot Noir marked by fruit, power, firm tannins and the patience required for fine ageing.
