Description
Domaine Tortochot’s 2006 Chambertin is a distinguished Grand Cru Burgundy from Gevrey-Chambertin, a village often described as the beginning of Burgundy’s great red-wine symphony. Crafted in the traditional, structured style associated with the appellation, it combines depth, power and aromatic complexity with the pedigree of one of Gevrey’s long-established family domaines.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a mature ruby to garnet appearance, with the evolution expected from a well-cellared 2006 Burgundy. The nose is powerful and expressive, revealing ripe red fruit alongside notes of liquorice and leather. On the palate, flavours of cherry and brandy are supported by firm tannins, refreshing acidity and a broad, impressive structure.
This is a mature wine that should be drinking beautifully now, offering both developed tertiary character and the concentration of Chambertin. With careful storage, it may continue to evolve positively in the short term, although its balance and complexity are best appreciated at this stage of its life.
Production
Produced from Pinot Noir in the celebrated Chambertin Grand Cru vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, the wine reflects the appellation’s reputation for powerful, age-worthy reds. Domaine Tortochot follows a traditional approach, allowing fruit character, structure and terroir to remain central. The wine is matured for an average of 18 months in new oak barrels, adding depth and subtle spice to its naturally robust profile.
Food & Serving
Its generous fruit, firm tannins and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for terrines and pâtés, roasted offal, roast pork, pork in a rich sauce and braised veal. It also pairs particularly well with intensely flavoured Burgundian cheeses such as Époisses and Langres. Serve at 13–14°C and consider decanting for around 30–60 minutes to help open the aromas, taking care not to leave a mature bottle exposed to air for too long.
Producer
Domaine Tortochot has been in the Tortochot family for four generations, with the family’s roots as winegrowers in Gevrey stretching back as far as records allow. The domaine’s history reaches back to Paul Tortochot, a modest 19th-century vigneron at the Place des Marroniers. Today, his great-granddaughter Chantal leads the estate. A trained oenologist, she represents a new generation of Burgundian winemakers while maintaining continuity with the domaine’s traditional identity. Her approach focuses on producing Pinot Noir with abundant fruit, firm tannins and lively acidity—wines that express the character of Gevrey-Chambertin and reward patience.
