Description
Domaine Saint Michel Rivesaltes 1977 is a mature Vin Doux Naturel from France’s Roussillon region, offering the depth and complexity that come with decades of careful ageing. Produced by a family domaine established in the early 1950s, this historic vintage combines vibrant fruit character with refined notes of nuts and dried fig.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature sweet wine shows a deep, burnished golden-amber hue. The nose is expressive and layered, with bright citrus aromas complemented by toasted nut nuances and the rich scent of dried figs.
On the palate, it is lively yet mature, balancing concentrated sweetness with refreshing citrus lift. A full, intense finish lingers with notes of dried fruit and nuts. As a 1977 vintage, it is already beautifully developed and best appreciated for its mature character; with excellent provenance and storage, it may continue to evolve gracefully.
Production
Domaine Saint Michel is located in the Roussillon, an area renowned for its warm Mediterranean climate and naturally concentrated wines. The domaine’s production was divided between dry wines, made without fortification, and high-quality, aged wines destined for Rivesaltes AOC Vin Doux Naturel. This style is traditionally made by stopping fermentation through the addition of grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness while giving the wine strength and exceptional longevity. Specific grape varieties and harvesting details for this bottle are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally at around 10–12°C. Its combination of sweetness, freshness and mature complexity makes it an excellent match for foie gras served either warm or cold, tangy fruit-based desserts and strongly flavoured blue cheeses. Decanting is generally not essential, although careful decanting can remove any deposit and allow the wine to open gently before serving.
Producer
Domaine Saint Michel was founded by Antoine Vaills in the early 1950s with an initial 20 hectares of vines. His successors, Jacqueline Vaills and Henry Rius, expanded the estate to 43 hectares in 1970, establishing its importance within the local wine community. Around half of the harvest was devoted to dry wines, while the finest and most age-worthy lots were reserved for Rivesaltes AOC Vin Doux Naturel, including this distinguished 1977 vintage.
