Description
Domaine Saint Michel Rivesaltes 1972 is a mature Vin Doux Naturel from one of France’s classic fortified-wine appellations. Produced from carefully selected, high-quality fruit and matured over decades, it offers an elegant combination of citrus freshness, nutty complexity and dried-fruit depth—a remarkable example of traditionally crafted Rivesaltes.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows the developed, burnished character expected of a well-aged sweet wine. Its aroma combines bright citrus-fruit notes with layers of toasted nuts and dried fig. On the palate, it is lively yet mature, balancing rich sweetness with refreshing energy and finishing with impressive length and intensity.
At more than five decades old, this Rivesaltes is ready to enjoy now and should be appreciated for its mature, tertiary character. Properly stored, it may continue to hold well, although its appeal lies in the complexity it has already gained through extended ageing.
Production
Domaine Saint Michel is a family-run estate founded in the early 1950s by Antoine Vaills, who began with 20 hectares. In 1970, his successors Jacqueline Vaills and Henry Rius expanded the domaine to 43 hectares. Approximately half of the harvest was used for dry wines without fortification, while the finest, age-worthy portion was reserved for Rivesaltes AOC Vin Doux Naturel. The wine’s fortified style and long maturation give it its characteristic richness, concentration and ability to age.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to preserve its freshness while allowing the mature aromas to develop. It is a natural match for warm or cold foie gras, tangy fruit-based desserts and blue cheeses, where its sweetness and acidity provide an excellent counterpoint to rich, salty and savoury flavours. Decanting is generally not essential, but a careful decant can be useful if the bottle has developed sediment or if you wish to let the wine open before serving.
Producer
Founded in the early 1950s, Domaine Saint Michel has been shaped by several generations of the Vaills family and their successors. The estate’s expansion from 20 to 43 hectares in 1970 established it as a significant local producer, with a particular commitment to reserving the finest, most suitable wines for Rivesaltes AOC Vin Doux Naturel. This 1972 vintage reflects the domaine’s long-standing focus on age-worthy, traditionally made fortified wines.
