Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Louisiane 2020

Domaine Saint-Damien’s Gigondas "La Louisiane" 2020 is a standout Southern Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected family estates. Built on old-vine Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah and a touch of Cinsault, it combines depth, precision and a beautifully Provençal character that places it among the finest Gigondas wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, vivid purple core that hints at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is highly expressive, with layers of kirsch, blackberry, crushed pepper, violet, sandalwood and garrigue-like herbs, unfolding with time in the glass. The palate is full-bodied and dense, yet impeccably balanced, with ripe black fruit, spice and floral nuances wrapped in polished, well-integrated tannins. The oak influence is subtle, allowing the wine’s pure fruit and mineral tension to shine. While already impressive, it has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for many years.

Production
La Louisiane comes from Domaine Saint-Damien’s old-vine Gigondas holdings, where many vines average over 70 years of age and some exceed a century. The estate’s vineyards are rooted in the stony, sun-drenched terroir of Gigondas in the Rhône Valley, with organic farming certified since 2012. The 2020 vintage is based mainly on Grenache with Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah, and was aged entirely in foudres to preserve freshness, texture and the authenticity of the site.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal wine for Provençal-style dishes, roast lamb, grilled beef, game, and slow-cooked stews with herbs and garlic. It also works beautifully with ratatouille, mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Domaine Saint-Damien has been in the Saurel family since 1821, with five generations working the land in and around Gigondas. The estate took its current name in 1979, inspired by a long-lost chapel dedicated to Saint Damien in La Beaumette. Today, under the guidance of Romain Saurel since 2015, the domaine is recognized as one of Gigondas’ benchmark producers, known for old vines, organic viticulture and consistently impressive wines with real regional identity.
