Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2017 300CL

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2017 is a classic, characterful Rhône red that combines old-school depth with real charm. Crafted by siblings Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, seventh-generation custodians of the domaine, it blends mostly Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre from their own vineyards for a wine that is both powerful and finely judged.

Tasting Notes
Deep in colour and immediately expressive, this Gigondas opens with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, liquorice and a subtle smoky note. On the palate it is full-bodied and intense, with ripe dark fruit wrapped in a velvety texture and lifted by warm southern French spice. Despite its richness, the wine retains balance and freshness, giving it impressive energy and length. It is already drinking beautifully, but has the structure and concentration to develop over at least another decade.

Production
The wine is made from estate-grown grapes in Gigondas, where the Rhône climate and stony terroirs help produce concentrated, spice-driven reds. Around 80% Grenache is complemented by 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre; all grapes are hand-harvested and fully de-stemmed before pressing. Fermentation lasts around 30 days, followed by up to two years of ageing in large, old foudres, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for lamb, game, slow-cooked beef, grilled ribeye, herb-roasted vegetables or rich Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille and daube provençale. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for an hour or two if opening young, to let the aromatics and texture fully open up.
