Description
Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2006 Magnum is one of the estate’s most iconic wines and one of the most celebrated expressions of Clos de la Roche in Morey-Saint-Denis. Crafted from Pinot Noir grown on old vines in some of the appellation’s most coveted parcels, it captures the rare Burgundy balance of power, elegance, and unmistakable terroir character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grand Cru shows impressive depth and complexity. The nose unfolds with layers of cherry, raspberry, forest floor, violets, and exotic spice, lifted by subtle limestone and mineral notes. With time, it gains further nuances of truffle, dried flowers, and undergrowth, adding the kind of aromatic intrigue that defines great Burgundy.
On the palate, the wine is rich and intense yet remarkably refined. Concentrated fruit is carried by silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a seemingly weightless sense of grace. Clos de la Roche is known for combining structure with finesse, and this 2006 magnum offers outstanding aging potential, rewarding careful cellaring for many years to come.
Production
Domaine Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche comes from old-vine Pinot Noir planted on prized parcels in the Clos de la Roche climat, where limestone-rich soils help shape the wine’s precision, mineral tension, and depth. The estate is known for a careful, terroir-driven approach that respects fruit purity and the individuality of each site, resulting in a Grand Cru with remarkable energy, balance, and concentration.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, veal, or mushroom-based preparations like truffle risotto and wild mushroom tart. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if young or tightly closed; for an older bottle, a short decant may be enough to preserve its delicate aromatics.
Producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most respected historic domaines, with a longstanding reputation for producing wines of exceptional purity and longevity. Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the estate is especially revered for its holdings in Clos de la Roche, which has long served as its flagship vineyard. Over the years, Domaine Ponsot has earned cult status among collectors for its distinctive style and consistently outstanding Grand Cru bottlings.
