Description
Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2005 Magnum is one of the estate’s most celebrated wines and a benchmark expression of one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ greatest vineyards. Made from Pinot Noir and sourced from old vines, it combines power, precision and unmistakable Burgundy character in a format that is especially prized by collectors. As Domaine Ponsot’s historic flagship, it stands as a classic example of why Clos de la Roche is considered one of the most revered Grand Cru sites in the Côte de Nuits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows remarkable depth and complexity, with a bouquet of cherry, raspberry, forest floor, violet and exotic spice, layered with subtle chalky and mineral tones. With time in bottle, it typically develops even more nuanced aromas of truffle, dried flowers and undergrowth, adding to its sense of grandeur.
On the palate, it is deep and concentrated yet exceptionally refined, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a lifted, almost weightless elegance. The wine’s balance of intensity and finesse gives it outstanding aging potential, and in a magnum format it is especially well suited to long cellaring.
Production
The wine comes from Clos de la Roche, a historic Grand Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis known for producing structured, mineral-driven Pinot Noir with both power and finesse. Domaine Ponsot works with old vines, including parcels in some of the appellation’s most sought-after sites, and its approach emphasizes purity of fruit and clear expression of terroir. Harvesting and vinification are carried out with great care to preserve the vineyard’s natural energy, detail and balance.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, veal tenderloin, game birds, wild mushroom risotto or truffled poultry. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if the wine is being opened young, especially in magnum format, to allow its aromatics and structure to unfold fully.
Producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most respected family domaines, with a long-standing reputation for producing age-worthy wines of precision and character. The estate is particularly renowned for its holdings in the Côte de Nuits, especially in Morey-Saint-Denis, where it has become closely associated with Clos de la Roche. Over the years, Domaine Ponsot has earned a devoted following among collectors for wines that consistently rank among the region’s most distinctive and highly sought-after bottlings.
