Description
Domaine Pierre Gélin’s Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 2022 is a serious and finely tuned expression of one of Burgundy’s most respected villages. From a well-sited Premier Cru parcel, it combines Gevrey-Chambertin’s signature structure with impressive finesse, offering both depth and precision in a style that reflects the domaine’s old-vine Pinot Noir expertise.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, clear ruby colour. The nose is classic Gevrey-Chambertin: ripe cherries, forest floor, dried herbs, a touch of smoke, and a subtle mineral edge with hints of spice and iron.
The palate is concentrated yet precise, with dark berries, liquorice, spice, and a gentle smoky note layered over a firm, elegant tannic frame. It has the structure to age gracefully and should continue to gain complexity over the next 8–12 years, and potentially longer in a good cellar.
Production
The wine comes from old Pinot Noir parcels in Clos Prieur, where the vines are rooted deeply in the soils of Gevrey-Chambertin, helping to deliver intensity and layered complexity. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, then vinified with spontaneous fermentation and a gentle, minimal-intervention approach to preserve purity and terroir expression. It is aged for around 18–20 months in French oak barrels, which are integrated carefully so the fruit remains at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast duck, game birds, beef, lamb, or dishes with mushroom and truffle accents. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help the aromatics open and soften the tannins.
Producer
Domaine Pierre Gélin is a historic family-run estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, long regarded as one of the key names in the village. Under Pierre-Emmanuel Gélin, the domaine continues to focus on old-vine Pinot Noir, careful hand harvesting, and restrained cellar work that emphasizes authenticity and site expression. Its wines are especially respected for showing both power and elegance, hallmarks of top Burgundy from this part of the Côte de Nuits.
