Description
Domaine Petit-Roy’s Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières 2022 is a graceful, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that marries generosity of fruit with quiet, underlying structure. Sourced from one of Savigny’s most admired Premier Cru sites, it captures the charm of ripe Burgundy while retaining focus and finesse. This cuvée stands out for its use of whole-cluster fermentation, which adds aromatic lift and complexity to an already characterful vineyard expression.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Les Lavières shows a vibrant, medium ruby colour with a youthful brightness around the rim. The nose is aromatic and open-knit, with sweet red cherries and ripe plums at the forefront, layered with notes of licorice, subtle florals, and delicate herbal tones that speak to the use of whole bunches.
On the palate, the wine is lush and inviting, with a fleshy, rounded mouthfeel and a silky, almost cashmere-like texture. Juicy red and dark berry fruit glides across the tongue, framed by supple, finely woven tannins and a fresh, savoury undertone that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long and graceful, with lingering red fruit, spice, and a gentle herbal echo. While already highly drinkable in its youth, this 1er Cru has the structural backbone and acidity to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years.
Production
Les Lavières is a revered Premier Cru climat in Savigny-lès-Beaune, named for its shallow limestone slabs (“laves”) that sit under thin topsoil, bringing a stony, mineral precision to Pinot Noir. Domaine Petit-Roy farms organically with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and careful handwork in the vines, allowing the vineyard’s character to shine through. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified with a significant proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, followed by élevage in mostly used French oak barrels to preserve purity of fruit and finesse, with minimal intervention and judicious use of sulfur at bottling.
Food & Serving
This Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined yet comforting dishes: roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, guinea fowl, or veal in a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled poultry, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté, Tomme, or Reblochon. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and silky texture. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the whole-cluster nuances and spice to fully unfurl.
Producer
Domaine Petit-Roy is a rising star in Burgundy, founded by Japanese-born vigneron Seiichi Saito, whose experience at benchmark estates like Domaine Mugnier and Chandon de Briailles has shaped his precise, low-intervention style. Based in the Côte de Beaune, Petit-Roy works both estate holdings and carefully chosen parcels under a micro-négoce model, all farmed organically or biodynamically. The domaine has quickly gained attention for its expressive, terroir-centric wines that combine lifted aromatics, delicate extraction, and vibrant energy. In a region steeped in tradition, Petit-Roy stands out as one of the most exciting newer names, bringing a thoughtful, artisanal approach to some of Burgundy’s classic appellations.
