Description
Domaine Muré’s Clos St Landelin Pinot Noir V 2021 is a refined, terroir-driven red that showcases just how exciting Alsatian Pinot Noir has become. The “V” stands for Vorbourg, a renowned Grand Cru site whose name can’t appear on the label for Pinot Noir, making this cuvée something of an insider’s secret. Clay-limestone soils, old vines and meticulous craftsmanship combine here to deliver a Pinot that is both graceful in body and strikingly deep in flavor, with a distinctly mineral backbone rooted in its historic hillside origins.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a luminous ruby hue with delicate garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both freshness and subtle complexity. The nose is pure and expressive: think wild cherries, raspberries and ripe forest berries layered with a touch of blackcurrant, gentle smoke, violet and a whisper of fine spice from its élevage.
On the palate, the 2021 V is poised and elegant rather than heavy, offering a slim, finely etched profile with impressive concentration. Silky tannins frame vibrant red fruit, while that clay-limestone terroir speaks through a cool, stony minerality that stretches into a long, precise finish. The moderate alcohol keeps the wine wonderfully drinkable, elevating its sense of finesse and charm. Enjoyable in its youth for its vivid fruit and perfume, it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 6–10 years, gaining more savory, earthy nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The Pinot Noir V comes from the celebrated Vorbourg hillside in southern Alsace, a terroir of sun-drenched slopes and well-drained clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. Domaine du Clos Saint Landelin carefully hand-harvests the grapes at optimal ripeness, ensuring only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit reaches the cellar. Vinification typically involves gentle destemming and a cool maceration to capture aromatic freshness, followed by a controlled fermentation that preserves purity of fruit and varietal character. Aging in carefully selected barrels adds subtle structure and complexity without overwhelming the delicate Pinot profile, allowing the vineyard’s mineral signature and finesse to shine through.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-friendly Pinot Noir that pairs beautifully with roast poultry, duck breast with cherry or berry sauces, veal, and lighter game such as guinea fowl or rabbit. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, creamy poultry fricassee, truffled risotto and soft to semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatics and freshness; a light chill can be particularly appealing in warmer weather. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a generous swirl in the glass to fully open the bouquet and refine the texture.
Producer
Domaine du Clos Saint Landelin is the family estate of the Muré family, whose winemaking roots in Alsace date back to the 17th century. Centered around the monopole vineyard Clos Saint Landelin at the base of the Vorbourg hillside, the domaine is known for its meticulous, terroir-focused approach and its early adoption of organic and biodynamic practices in the region. While the Muré name is often associated with benchmark Rieslings and other classic Alsatian whites, their work with Pinot Noir—especially from the clay-limestone parcels of Vorbourg—has helped redefine what Alsace can achieve with this grape. Widely respected among sommeliers and enthusiasts alike, Domaine Muré stands as a reference for elegant, ageworthy wines that express the nuance and character of southern Alsace’s great sites.
