Description
Domaine Muré’s Clos St Landelin Gewurztraminer Côte de Rouffach Bio 2022 is a refined, organically farmed expression of one of Alsace’s most characterful grape varieties. Sourced from the historic slopes of Côte de Rouffach, this white wine offers all the aromatic flamboyance of Gewürztraminer, but in a more poised, food‑friendly style. It marries generous perfume with a surprisingly light-footed profile, making it an excellent choice for those who love intensity without heaviness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 shows a bright, deep golden hue with delicate, oily legs hinting at concentration and texture. The nose is classic Alsace Gewürztraminer: rose petals, lychee, ripe mango and candied citrus peel, layered with exotic spice, ginger, and a touch of honeyed floral notes. Subtle hints of smoky minerality and dried herbs add complexity beyond the typical exuberant fruit.
On the palate, this is rich yet not cloying, with a silky, almost creamy mouthfeel balanced by a fresh, gentle acidity. The style is off‑dry, echoing the estate’s benchmark profile of moderate residual sugar supported by around 4 g/l of acidity and a generous yet harmonious alcohol level. Flavours of passion fruit, lychee, rosewater, baked pear and sweet spice unfold gradually, leading into a long, warm finish with lingering notes of orange blossom and ginger. Enjoyable in its youth for its aromatic intensity, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over 5–8 years, developing more honeyed, spicy, and slightly smoky nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Domaine Muré’s Clos St Landelin Gewurztraminer Côte de Rouffach Bio are grown on the sun‑blessed, south and south‑east facing slopes around Rouffach in southern Alsace, an area renowned for its warm, dry microclimate and limestone‑rich soils. This terroir gives Gewürztraminer both ripeness and a clear mineral backbone. Certified organic, the vineyard is carefully tended with respect for biodiversity, and yields are kept low to maximize concentration. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and gently pressed to preserve aromatics. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel or traditional large foudres, allowing the natural character of the grape and site to shine, followed by ageing on fine lees to enhance texture and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural partner for bold, aromatic cuisines and rich cheeses. Try it with spicy Asian dishes such as Thai curries or Vietnamese cuisine, Moroccan tagines with dried fruit, or flavourful roasted poultry and pork with aromatic glazes. In its Alsatian heartland, it famously stands up to pungent Munster cheese, as well as washed‑rind cheeses and foie gras. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12 °C, to let the aromatics fully bloom without losing freshness. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more layers of spice and floral complexity.
Producer
Domaine du Clos Saint Landelin is the historic estate of the Muré family, winegrowers in Alsace since 1650 and among the most respected names in the region. Located in Rouffach, at the southern end of the wine route, the domaine is best known for its monopole Clos St Landelin, a walled vineyard whose steep slopes and complex limestone soils produce wines of remarkable depth and precision. Over generations, the Muré family has become a benchmark for elegant, terroir‑driven Alsace wines, with a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. Their work has helped cement Côte de Rouffach and Clos St Landelin’s reputation as reference sites for expressive, ageworthy Gewürztraminer and other noble Alsace varieties.
