Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Sous la Velle 2024 captures the classic character of Meursault: refined, mineral-driven and generous, yet never overly heavy. Produced by a family domaine with six generations of history, it combines traditional Burgundy craftsmanship with a deliberately restrained approach to vineyard treatments and élevage.
Tasting Notes
Bright and refined in appearance, this white Burgundy offers an expressive nose of ripe orchard fruit, subtle creaminess and delicate toast, underpinned by the mineral freshness typical of Meursault. On the palate, it is supple and rounded, with a pleasing sense of richness balanced by lively acidity and a distinct mineral line.
The wine finishes with impressive length and finesse, leaving notes of ripe fruit, gentle spice and fresh minerality. It is approachable in its youth, but its balance and maturation in oak and on the lees should allow it to develop further complexity over the next several years.
Production
The grapes are sourced from Sous la Velle in Meursault, Burgundy, a terroir known for producing expressive Chardonnay with both richness and mineral freshness. Domaine Michelot limits vineyard treatments where possible and focuses instead on carefully planned ploughing and soil work to maintain healthy, living soils. The grapes are hand-selected in the vineyard, lightly crushed and given a 6–12-hour cold maceration on the skins. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 10–12 months in barriques, 15% of which are new, followed by a further 5–6 months on the lees to refine its balance and texture.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for classic Burgundy dishes, this Meursault pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled fish, shellfish, poultry in a creamy sauce, scallops and risotto with mushrooms. Serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short period of aeration in the glass or 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help reveal its aromatic depth, particularly when enjoyed young.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has been in the Michelot family for six generations and now extends across more than 19 hectares, including several prestigious Premier Cru vineyards. The domaine is recognised for combining meticulous vineyard work with a thoughtful, traditional winemaking approach while maintaining its independence as both grower and producer. Rather than participating in a formal organic certification system, the estate follows its own carefully considered programme for limiting treatments and promoting healthy soils.
