Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Sous la Velle 2024 offers a refined expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated white-wine appellations. Elegant rather than heavy, it combines Meursault’s characteristic finesse and mineral freshness with a long, graceful finish. The wine comes from a domaine that has remained in the Michelot family for six generations and now encompasses more than 19 hectares, including several prestigious Premier Cru vineyards.
Tasting Notes
Bright and delicately coloured, this Meursault shows a poised, polished character. The nose is expected to reveal the classic Chardonnay profile of Meursault, with subtle orchard-fruit notes, refined floral impressions and a mineral edge shaped by the appellation’s terroir. On the palate, it is finely textured and balanced, combining freshness and understated richness rather than weight. Mineral precision carries through to a persistent, elegant finish.
The wine’s structure and balance should allow it to develop additional complexity in bottle over the medium term, with careful cellaring bringing greater integration between its fruit, mineral character and oak influence.
Production
Produced from Chardonnay grown in the Sous la Velle climat of Meursault, the wine reflects Domaine Michelot’s restrained approach in the vineyard. The domaine deliberately limits disease treatments and follows a carefully planned ploughing programme to maintain healthy soils. Grapes are harvested by hand, with a selection of the finest fruit in the vineyard. After gentle crushing, the grapes undergo a 6–12-hour cold maceration on their skins, followed by alcoholic fermentation in wooden barrels and 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is matured in oak barriques for 10–12 months, with around 15% new oak, and then spends a further 5–6 months ageing on its lees to achieve balance and harmony.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 11–13°C. Its combination of mineral freshness and subtle richness makes it an excellent partner for roast or grilled fish, shellfish, poultry in a light cream sauce, scallops and refined vegetable dishes. It can be enjoyed without decanting, although a brief period of aeration in the glass—or a gentle decant shortly before serving—can help reveal its full aromatic detail.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has been owned by the Michelot family for six generations and is now established as a significant domaine in Meursault, with more than 19 hectares under vine. Its holdings include a number of prestigious Premier Cru vineyards. The domaine places strong emphasis on preserving vineyard health through limited treatments and careful soil management, while maintaining its independence as both grower and winemaker rather than joining an organised organic-winegrowing certification system.
