Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Sous la Velle 2023 captures the classic Meursault style with finesse, mineral freshness, generous texture and impressive length, while remaining beautifully balanced rather than heavy. Made by a family with more than six generations of experience in Meursault, it comes from a domaine of over 19 hectares that also includes several prestigious Premier Cru vineyards.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden in appearance, this white Burgundy offers an inviting nose of ripe orchard fruit, citrus and subtle floral notes, complemented by delicate toasted and creamy nuances from its barrel ageing. On the palate, it is refined and rounded, combining Meursault’s characteristic fullness with chalky mineral tones and lively freshness. The finish is long, clean and well integrated, with a gentle touch of oak and a savoury, persistent character.
Although enjoyable in its youth, the wine should develop greater complexity with a few years in bottle. It can be expected to drink well over the next 5–8 years, depending on storage conditions and personal preference.
Production
Produced from Chardonnay in the Meursault appellation, the wine reflects the region’s balance of mineral character and rich texture. Domaine Michelot limits preventive treatments in the vineyards and instead follows a carefully planned ploughing programme to maintain healthy soils; the best grapes are selected by hand at harvest. The bunches are lightly crushed, followed by a 6–12-hour cold skin maceration. Fermentation takes place in wooden barrels, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 10–12 months in oak barriques, 15% of which are new, before spending a further 5–6 months ageing on its lees for added harmony and depth. The domaine is not part of an organised organic certification system, allowing it to retain its independence as grower and winemaker.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this Meursault as an aperitif or serve it with delicate starters, seafood, shellfish, poultry in a light cream sauce, or mature and soft cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential for the 2023 vintage, but 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help reveal its aromas and texture, particularly when served young.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has been owned and operated by the Michelot family for more than six generations and is now established as one of the notable family domaines of Meursault. Its vineyards cover more than 19 hectares, including a number of respected Premier Cru parcels. The domaine combines careful manual selection with a restrained approach to vineyard treatments and a traditional barrel-based style, producing wines that express Meursault’s signature richness, minerality and finesse.
