Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Narvaux 2023 offers the finesse and richness often associated with Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières, while expressing an extra layer of vibrant mineral character. From one of Burgundy’s respected family-run domaines, this Chardonnay combines creamy texture with vivid candied-citrus freshness and a long, refined finish.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in appearance, this Meursault reveals an expressive nose of orange peel, candied citrus and delicate orchard-fruit nuances. The palate is generous and creamy, with excellent concentration balanced by pronounced mineral freshness. Flavours of orange and candied citrus linger through the finish, giving the wine both richness and precision.
Although approachable in its youth, the wine’s balance, structure and time on the lees should allow it to develop greater complexity over the next several years. With bottle age, expect increasingly rounded texture and more layered mineral and nutty notes.
Production
The grapes come from Narvaux, a highly regarded Meursault lieu-dit known for producing wines with both finesse and mineral drive. Domaine Michelot limits treatments in the vineyards and follows a carefully planned ploughing programme to maintain healthy soils. The best grapes are selected and harvested by hand, lightly crushed, then given 6–12 hours of cold maceration and skin contact. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in wooden barrels, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine matures in barriques, 15% of which are new, for 10–12 months, followed by a further 5–6 months on the lees to refine its balance and texture.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for white meats and poultry, this Meursault also works beautifully with foie gras and mature, creamy cheeses. It is particularly well suited to Mont d’Or. Serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C. Decanting is not essential for a young bottle, but 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine and reveal its layered citrus and mineral character.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has been owned and run by the Michelot family for six generations and now extends across more than 19 hectares, including several prestigious Meursault 1er Cru vineyards. The domaine is recognised for its independent approach, combining careful vineyard work with traditional, patient cellar practices. Rather than joining a formal organic certification system, the family chooses to manage treatments selectively and focus on long-term soil health, while maintaining complete independence as both grower and winemaker.
