Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Genevrières 2023 is a refined expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated white-wine appellations. It combines the classic Meursault hallmarks of richness and finesse with a precise mineral character and impressive length, while retaining a pleasing sense of freshness and restraint. The wine comes from the Genevrières Premier Cru vineyard, a site long recognised for producing some of Meursault’s most elegant and sought-after Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Bright pale gold in appearance, this Meursault Genevrières opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe orchard fruit, white flowers and subtle hints of toasted oak. Mineral nuances add lift and complexity, reflecting the wine’s distinguished Premier Cru origin.
On the palate, it is generous and beautifully textured, with flavours of pear, citrus and stone fruit balanced by saline minerality and refreshing acidity. The finish is long, refined and harmonious rather than heavy. With its concentration, balance and structure, the 2023 vintage should drink well in its youth but can develop further complexity over approximately 5–8 years with careful cellaring.
Production
Produced from Chardonnay grown in Meursault’s Genevrières Premier Cru vineyards, the wine benefits from the appellation’s calcareous clay soils and favourable Côte de Beaune setting. Domaine Michelot limits vineyard treatments and follows a carefully planned ploughing programme to maintain healthy soils. The grapes are manually harvested with selection of the best fruit, lightly crushed and given a 6–12-hour cold maceration on the skins. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 10–12 months in barriques, 15% of which are new, before spending a further 5–6 months on its lees to achieve balance and depth.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for foie gras, this Meursault Genevrières also complements roast or poached poultry, white meats and richly textured dishes with cream or butter-based sauces. It is equally well suited to mature, full-flavoured cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C. Decanting is not essential, but a brief decant or 20–30 minutes in a large Burgundy glass can help the wine open and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has remained in the Michelot family for six generations and is now one of the established names of Meursault. The estate covers more than 19 hectares, including a number of prestigious Premier Cru vineyards. The family maintains an independent approach as both grower and winemaker, choosing not to participate in a formal organic certification scheme while taking a considered approach to vineyard treatments and soil management. Its wines are valued for combining the richness associated with Meursault with finesse, minerality and a clear sense of place.
