Description
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault 2023 captures the appellation’s celebrated combination of richness, finesse and mineral freshness. Crafted by blending fruit from several carefully selected terroirs, it offers a generous, fruit-driven interpretation of Meursault while retaining an elegant, refined character. The Michelot family has tended vines in Burgundy for six generations, making this a wine rooted in longstanding local experience.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden in appearance, this Meursault opens with inviting aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus and subtle floral tones, complemented by delicate notes of vanilla and lightly toasted oak. On the palate, it is rounded and luxurious, with flavours of pear, apple and stone fruit balanced by fresh acidity and a refined mineral finish. The judicious use of oak adds texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
This is an approachable Meursault in its youth, but its balance, structure and time on the lees should allow it to develop additional layers of toast, honey and dried fruit over the next several years. Enjoy from 2025 to approximately 2030, depending on storage conditions and personal preference.
Production
The wine is made from Chardonnay grown across a selection of Meursault terroirs, with the blending of different sites central to its style and balance. Domaine Michelot limits disease treatments where possible and instead relies on carefully planned ploughing and vineyard work to maintain healthy soils. Grapes are manually harvested and selected before gentle crushing and a 6–12-hour cold maceration with skin contact. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures in barriques, around 15% of which are new, for 10–12 months, followed by a further 5–6 months on its lees.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for fish and seafood, this Meursault is particularly well suited to grilled or pan-fried fish, scallops, lobster and creamy seafood dishes. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal and other delicately flavoured white meats. Serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C. Decanting is not essential, although 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine and reveal its aromatic depth, especially when enjoyed young.
Producer
Domaine Michelot has remained in the Michelot family for six generations and today covers more than 19 hectares in and around Meursault, including a number of prestigious Premier Cru vineyards. The domaine is respected for combining traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with a thoughtful approach to vineyard care, prioritising soil health and manual selection in the vineyards. Its decision to remain independent of formal organic certification reflects a tailored, site-specific approach rather than a lack of commitment to sustainable cultivation.
