Description

Domaine Marjan Simčič BRDA Cru Selection Pinot Grigio Ramato 2024 is an expressive orange wine from Brda, Slovenia’s historic Collio region. Made from Pinot Grigio with extended skin contact, spontaneous fermentation and no filtration, it offers a distinctive copper hue, generous texture and a vivid sense of place. The wine comes from a family tradition dating back to 1860 and has received 92 points from James Suckling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this unfiltered Ramato shows a luminous copper-amber colour. The nose combines ripe orchard fruit and citrus with subtle floral, herbal and savoury notes, alongside the mineral character associated with Brda’s marl, clay and limestone soils. Eight days of skin maceration give the wine added aromatic depth and a gently grippy texture. On the palate, it is structured and rounded, balancing ripe fruit with refreshing acidity, fine tannins and a persistent mineral finish. Oak maturation adds discreet complexity without overwhelming the Pinot Grigio’s character. While approachable in its youth, the wine’s concentration and structure should allow it to develop further over the next several years, gaining additional savoury and tertiary nuances.

Production
The grapes come from the Ronc di Zegla vineyards in Brda, at approximately 250 metres above sea level with a favourable south-western exposure. Vines are rooted in a mix of marl, clay and limestone, and the Cru is managed according to ecological and sustainable principles. Harvest takes place by hand from late August, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine remains on its skins for eight days in conical wooden vats, where it develops its colour, texture and aromatic definition. After gentle pressing, it matures for 12 months in oak casks and then spends at least six further months ageing before release. It is bottled without filtration to preserve its natural expression.

Food & Serving
This versatile Ramato is especially well suited to seafood, shellfish, grilled or roasted fish, sushi and sashimi. Its texture and savoury complexity also make it an excellent match for spicy Asian dishes, aromatic herbs, lightly fermented foods and vegetable-based plates. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant or gentle aeration can help open the wine and soften its youthful structure.

Producer
Marjan Simčič is a highly regarded family producer in Brda, with a winemaking heritage stretching back to 1860. Working in the vineyards around Ronc di Zegla, the estate is known for low-intervention wines that express the distinctive borderland character shared by Slovenian Brda and Italy’s Collio. Its focus on careful vineyard management, spontaneous fermentation and extended maturation has established the winery as one of the region’s notable ambassadors.
