Description
Domaine Les Canons Clos de Belligné 2020 is a sumptuous late-harvest Chenin Blanc from the Loire, crafted in a richly opulent yet finely balanced style. Sourced from old vines rooted in schist and phtanite, it marries depth and concentration with a remarkable sense of freshness. This cuvée showcases Chenin Blanc’s historic role in the Loire as one of the world’s great grapes for long-lived, noble sweet wines, offering a modern expression built on time-honored methods.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos de Belligné 2020 displays a deep golden hue, hinting at both its maturity and concentration. The nose is layered and complex, with notes of quince paste, dried apricots, linden blossom, and a touch of honey, underpinned by a subtle, stony minerality that speaks to its schist- and phtanite-rich soils.
On the palate, the wine is generous and textural, coating the mouth with luscious sweetness while remaining vibrant and lifted. Flavors of preserved citrus, baked orchard fruits, and dried stone fruits unfold alongside delicate floral and herbal nuances. The bright, persistent acidity keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy, giving it an elegant, almost weightless finish despite its concentration. With its structure and balance, this dessert wine has excellent aging potential and will continue to develop added complexity over the next 10–20 years, gaining even more nuance of spice, honey, and tertiary depth.
Production
Clos de Belligné is drawn from old Chenin Blanc vines rooted in a distinctive mix of schist and phtanite—hard, metamorphic rocks that help drain excess water and store heat, encouraging slow, even ripening. The late-harvest fruit is picked at optimal maturity to capture both intense natural sweetness and vibrant acidity. Following harvest, the must undergoes an exceptionally long, slow fermentation lasting over two years, allowing complex aromatics and texture to build gradually. A subsequent extended élevage further polishes the wine, integrating its sweetness, acidity, and mineral backbone into a seamless, harmonious whole, without excessive intervention.
Food & Serving
This dessert wine is a natural match for rich, nuanced dishes such as foie gras pâté, blue cheeses like Roquefort, or aged hard cheeses with nutty character. It also pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts—think tarte Tatin, almond-frangipane tarts, or poached pears—as well as simple butter shortbread or almond biscuits. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness without muting its aromatics. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving can help the wine unfurl its full aromatic complexity.
